Hermann Prieß was the commander of 3rd SS Division Totenkopf following the death of Theodor Eicke in February 1943. On October 30, 1944 he became the commanding officer of the 1st SS-Panzerkorps "Leibstandarte" and led it during the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, Hermann Prieß was convicted of war crimes because of his involvement in the Malmedy massacre and was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. He was released in 1954.

Dopo il fallimento di questa offensiva l'unità di Priess, venne trasferita, con le altre forze delle Waffen-SS, in Ungheria dove, a partire dal 18 febbraio 1945, venne impegnata nell'Operazione Frühlingserwachen. Terminata la guerra, Priess venne condannato, il 16 luglio 1946, a 20 anni di carcere, nel corso del processo per il massacro di Malmedy, quale diretto superiore di Joachim Peiper. Scarcerato nell'ottobre del 1954, morì nel 1983 ad Ahrensburg.
