The album received praise prior to its release from the NME who called it, "The best album you'll hear this year, by a mile". The album proved a comeback for Bernard Butler and Brett Anderson as the album was praised by critics and fans alike. Though due to a flood of albums, including those by The White Stripes and Coldplay, the album charted at a relatively weak #15. As a strange sidenote, former Britpop stars Damon Albarn and Oasis released albums only weeks apart from the ex-Suede duo. The album sees a much more mature contribution by Anderson on the lyrical side, as he strayed away from his often attacked use of redundant vocabulary. Butler's production is notable for its use of the "wall of sound", thus creating a lush backdrop for Anderson's vocals. Andrew Womack, of Online magazine The Morning News placed Here Come the Tears at number 8 in its list of the top 10 albums of 2005.
