- Henry Wise Wood Senior High School was built in 1961 and is situated on 13.77 acres (55,700 m) in the Southwest quadrant of the City of Calgary. The school is named after Henry Wise Wood, an Alberta pioneer who was instrumental in forming the Alberta Wheat Pool and the United Farmers of Alberta. Henry Wise Wood is regarded as an influential individual in Canadian agricultural and farming history. The school prides itself as "the home of scholars, artists, and champions. " The school motto is "Finis Coronus Neilus," Latin for "The End Crowns Neil Hauer. " Academically, the school offers the International Baccalaureate Programme (IB) and the Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE), in addition to the full range of academic programs standard to the province. Henry Wise Wood High School is also noted as possessing one of the top football programs in western Canada. Under the staunch leadership of quarterback/wide receiver/defensive back/tight end/offensive coordinator/mascot Neil Hauer, the team attained a 4-2 record in the 2007 regular season. Despite suffering multiple compound fractures in each leg during the regular season finale, Hauer defied all odds by not only playing the entire length of the postseason, but by scoring all 79 points to rout the St. Francis Browns 79-3 in the championship game, played at the Calgary Stampeders' McMahon Stadium. A monumental statue depicting the victorious Hauer crushing the skulls of several defeated Browns players was commissioned immediately following the game and was erected in front of the stadium to remind the other Wise Wood players that maybe, one day, they would be able to at least score a point or two. In 2008, expectations for the team had greatly diminished, as Hauer's training and practice rituals had become a secondary priority following his election to President. Unbeknownst to the media and fans, however, was the brilliant and unorthodox plan Hauer's keen mind had conjured over the offseason: the introduction of an obscure ringer, a man a local paper described as "apparently pretty good at figure skating or something like that. " Combining this newfound ally with his innovative use of the Segway as a method of in-game transportation, he managed to complete the regular and postseason undefeated, all the while retaining enough spare time to invent the zipper. Hauer is currently retired and serves as dictatorial administrator of a local community.
