Dafür wurde Norberg-Hodge 1986 mit dem alternativen Nobelpreis ausgezeichnet. Sie ist eine der führenden Analysten der Auswirkungen der Globalisierung auf die Kulturen der Welt. Dadurch, dass sie sich in ihrer Jugend/Studium in Ländern wie Schweden, Deutschland, England und den USA aufhielt, spricht sie sieben Sprachen. Dans cette optique, elle fonda en 1975 la Société Internationale pour l'Écologie et la Culture, une ONG à but non lucratif. Hélèna fut également cofondatrice du Forum International sur la Mondialisation, une alliance de soixante chefs de groupes militants, scolaires, economistes, chercheurs et écrivains, alliance formée pour stimuler une nouvelle réflexion, utiliser la pédagogie comme moyen de réponse à la mondialisation économique libérale. Elle est également impliquée dans le Réseau Mondial d'Écovillages et dirigea le Projet Ladakh, célèbre pour son travail novateur pour développer durablement le plateau Tibétain. Elle reçut le Right Livelihood Award appelé le Prix Nobel alternatif en 1986 pour le Ladakh Ecological Development Group dont elle est la fondatrice. La philosophe britannique est reconnue pour être une analyste experte concernant les conséquences de l'économie mondialisée sur l'agriculture. Elle est également polyglotte, pratiquant un répertoire de sept langues, ayant vécu en Suède, en Allemagne, aux États-Unis et en Angleterre.
