- Heart of Darkness is a novella written by Joseph Conrad. Before its 1902 publication, it appeared as a three-part series (1899) in Blackwood's Magazine. It was classified by the Modern Library website editors as one of the "100 best novels" and part of the Western canon. The story centres on Charles Marlow, who narrates most of the book. He is an Englishman who takes a foreign assignment from a Belgian trading company as a river-boat captain in Africa. Heart of Darkness exposes the dark side of European colonization while exploring the three levels of darkness that the protagonist, Marlow, encounters: the darkness of the Congo wilderness, the darkness of the Europeans' cruel treatment of the African natives, and the unfathomable darkness within every human being for committing heinous acts of evil. Although Conrad does not give the name of the river, at the time of writing the Congo Free State, the location of the large and important Congo River, was a private colony of Belgium's King Leopold II. In the story, Marlow is employed to transport ivory downriver. However, his more pressing assignment is to return Kurtz, another ivory trader, to civilization, in a cover-up. Kurtz has a reputation throughout the region. This symbolic story is a story within a story or frame narrative. It follows Marlow as he recounts his Congolese adventure to a group of men aboard a ship anchored in the Thames Estuary from dusk through to late night. The passage of time and the darkening sky during Marlow's narrative parallels the atmosphere of the events he narrates.
Heart of Darkness) on puolalaissyntyisen brittikirjailijan Joseph Conradin kirjoittama vuonna 1902 julkaistu romaani. Ennen julkaisuaan kirja ilmestyi kolmiosaisena jatkokertomuksena Blackwood's Magazine -lehdessä 1899. Kirjaa pidetään merkittävänä englanninkielisenä teoksena ja osana länsimaista kaanonia. Kirja kertoo miehestä, joka tunkeutuu jokilaivalla Kongo-jokea pitkin syvälle Kongoon tavatakseen mielessään myyttiset mittasuhteet saaneen norsunluukauppias Kurtzin. Francis Ford Coppolan elokuva Ilmestyskirja. Nyt. (1979) pohjautuu löyhästi Pimeyden sydämeen, mutta tapahtumat on siirretty Vietnamin sodan aikaiseen Kaakkois-Aasiaan.
- A sötétség mélyén (Heart of Darkness) Joseph Conrad lengyel születésű angol író regénye.

- Jądro ciemności (tytuł oryginalny Heart of Darkness) – opowiadanie Josepha Conrada (Józefa Korzeniowskiego) po raz pierwszy opublikowane w 1899 roku w Blackwood's Magazine w trzech odcinkach.

- Heart of Darkness is a novella written by Joseph Conrad. The story was first published, as a three-part series, Febuary, March, and April of 1899 in Blackwood's Magazine . Then later, in 1902, it was included in the book "Youth: a Narrative, and Two Other Stories" - which consisted of Youth: a Narrative, Heart of Darkness, and The End of the Tether in that order, to loosely illustrate the three stages of life. In 1917 Conrad wrote an Author's Note for future editions of the book. In the Author's Note Conrad discusses the three stories and the character Marlow (the main narrator of the first two stories). It was first published as a three-part serial, February, March, and April 1899, in Blackwood's Magazine . Then later, in 1902, Heart of Darkness was included in the book "Youth: a Narrative, and Two Other Stories" (published November 13, 1902, by William Blackwood). The volume consisted of Youth: a Narrative, Heart of Darkness, and The End of the Tether in that order, to loosely illustrate the three stages of life. For future editions of the book, in 1917 Conrad wrote an "Author's Note" where he discusses each of the three stories, and makes light commentary on the character Marlow - the narrator of the tales within the first two stories. He also mentions how Youth marks the first appearance of Marlow. In Conrad's words, regarding Heart of Darkness: In a letter to Henry-Durand Darvay, dated April 10, 1902, Joseph Conrad wrote : "A wild story of a journalist who becomes manager of a station in the interior and makes himself worshipped by a tribe of savages. Thus described, the subject seems comic, but it isn't. " Then the following month, on May 31, 1902, in a letter to William Blackwood, Conrad remarks: "I call your own kind self to witness [... ... ] the last pages of Heart of Darkness where the interview of the man and the girl locks in—as it were—the whole 30000 words of narrative description into one suggestive view of a whole phase of life and makes of that story something quite on another plane than an anecdote of a man who went mad in the Centre of Africa. " Through the years the story gained in popularity. It has since been published in abundance, in several different forms (collected works, paperbacks, annotated studies, etc. ), and has been translated into many different languages. Being that 'Heart of Darkness' is such a relatively short story, it has perhaps generated proportionately more pure text of discussion - in the manner of interpretations of meaning, analysis, commentary, reviews, essays, and even provisions of historical context - than any other work in English literature. In 2010, Heart of Darkness was classified by the Modern Library website editors as one of the "100 best novels" and part of the Western canon.

- Heart of Darkness (1899), by Joseph Conrad, is a short novel, presented as a frame narrative, about Charles Marlow’s job as an ivory transporter down an unnamed river in Africa. ... a mighty big river, that you could see on the map, resembling an immense snake uncoiled, with its head in the sea, its body at rest curving afar over a vast country, and its tail lost in the depths of the land. In the course of his commercial-agent work in Africa, the seaman Marlow becomes obsessed by Mr. Kurtz, an ivory-procurement agent, a man of established notoriety among the natives and the European colonials. The story is a thematic exploration of the savagery-versus-civilization relationship, and of the colonialism and the racism that make imperialism possible. Originally published as a three-part serial story, in ‘Blackwood’s Magazine’, the novella Heart of Darkness has been variously published and translated into many languages. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Heart of Darkness as the sixty-seventh top-novel of the hundred-best-novels in English of the twentieth century; and is included to the Western canon.
