Lord Havelock Vetinari is the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, the head of the fictional city state of Ankh-Morpork in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. He is sometimes said to have been based on the Italian statesman and diplomat, Niccolò Machiavelli, but in fact favours a subtly different (though equally pragmatic) form of statecraft.

Il déteste le mot « dictateur », préférant se qualifier de « tyran bénévole ». Vétérini fait l'objet à de multiples reprises de tentatives d'assassinat ou de coups d'état, mais parvint à en réchapper la plupart du temps grâce au Guet ou à son formidable esprit retors. Le Patricien donne l'impression de toujours tout savoir et de calculer exactement toutes les conséquences comme si le monde était un échiquier géant et il est très difficile de l'étonner. Il écrit en secret un manuscrit nommé Le Serviteur, un manuel à l'usage des politiciens ambitieux, dont l'un des plus fameux conseils est « Ne jamais bâtir un cachot d'où l'on ne peut pas sortir ». On apprend dans Ronde de nuit que le Seigneur Vétérini est un ancien élève de la guilde des Assassins et aurait tué le Patricien de l'époque. Il apparait comme très brillant dans ce qu'il entreprend et comme un des meilleurs assassins qu'il puisse exister. On sait aussi qu'il garde dans une chambre secrète Léonard de Quirm, le plus grand inventeur de tous les temps et va parfois dans son atelier pour y dénicher quelques inventions. Vétérini a une petite armée, la Garde du palais, qui lui est entièrement dévouée. Il a une aversion pour les mimes, qu'il pend par les pieds dans une fosse à scorpions dont on a peint sur une paroi « Apprends ton texte » ! Il a un petit fox terrier très vieux et répondant au nom de Karlou, auquel il est très attaché.
