The Havanese is a dog breed of the Bichon type, developed from the now extinct Blanquito de la Habana ("little white dog of Havana"). The Blanquito descended from the also now extinct Bichon Tenerife, which was introduced to the Canary Islands by the Cubans. It is believed that the Blanquito was eventually cross-bred with other Bichon types, including the Poodle, to create what is now known as the Havanese.

Zoals zoveel rassen dreigde ook nu weer een hondenras ten onder te gaan als direct gevolg van politieke gebeurtenissen. Slechts enkelen van de gevluchte Cubanen waren in staat geweest hun honden mee te nemen. Die enkelingen hebben meer dan tien jaar het ras in stand gehouden; Door hun toedoen is de havanezer niet uitgestorven. Mrs. Goodale is in 1975 in Amerika serieus begonnen met de heropbouw van het ras. In Europa is men sinds 1982 weer begonnen met ze te fokken. En in 1984 werden de eerste Havanezers in Nederland geïmporteerd.

Färgen är ofta vit, beige, sobel eller svart, ibland en grundfärg med inslag av en eller två andra färger. Havanaiser lämpar sig väl som sällskapshundar. De har ett måttligt rörelsebehov och är lättdresserade, och uppskattar därför agility-träning. De klarar också spårning. Det finns till och med exempel på havanaiser som klarat jaktprov för rådjur! Havanaiser har använts förr som sängvärmare hos fint folk, eftersom de trivs i värme, och de har även använts som cirkushundar.
