- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the seventh and final of the Harry Potter novels written by British author J. K. Rowling. The book was released on 21 July 2007 by Bloomsbury Publishing in the United Kingdom, in the United States by Scholastic, and in Canada by Raincoast Books, ending the series that began in 1997 with the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The novel chronicles the events directly following Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2005), and the final confrontation between the wizards Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort. Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in January 2007. Before its release, Bloomsbury reportedly spent GB£10 million to keep the book's contents safe before its release date. American publisher Arthur Levine refused any copies of the novel to be released in advance for press review, although two reviews were submitted early. Shortly before release, photos of all 759 pages of the U.S. edition were leaked and transcribed, leading Scholastic to look for the source that had leaked it. Released globally in 93 countries, Deathly Hallows broke sales records as the fastest-selling book ever. It sold 15 million copies in the first 24 hours following its release, including more than 11 million in the U.S. and UK alone. The previous record, 9 million in its first day, had been held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The novel has also been translated into over 120 languages, including Ukrainian, Swedish, and Hindi. Major themes in the novel are death and living in a corrupted society, and critics have compared them to Christian allegories. Generally well-received, the book won the 2008 Colorado Blue Spruce Book Award, and the American Library Association named it a "Best Book for Young Adults". A two-part film based on the book began showing in November 2010, when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 was released; Part 2 was released on 15 July 2011.

Il 16 luglio, pochi giorni prima dell'uscita ufficiale del libro, su internet è comparso un PDF contenente le foto di tutte le pagine del libro che si sarebbe poi rivelato l'originale, rompendo così il rigoroso embargo imposto dalla casa editrice. Si trattava della versione statunitense, in cui si potevano leggere tutte le 759 pagine del libro. Il PDF ha cominciato a circolare su canali peer-to-peer. Il giorno prima dell'uscita del libro la Scholastic, la casa editrice che stampa la serie negli Stati Uniti, ha definito tale versione "convincente", ma non aveva rilasciato commenti definitivi sull'autenticità del libro. In seguito la stessa autrice, tramite il suo avvocato, aveva ammesso che delle versioni "plausibili" del libro erano cominciate a circolare, ma aveva invitato i lettori a ignorare tali versioni e chiesto a coloro che le avevano lette di non rivelare ad altri elementi del libro. La Scholastic ha quindi affermato che una piccolissima parte delle copie pronte per la distribuzione erano state già spedite ad alcuni lettori (circa 1200 copie) e ha annunciato l'intenzione di volere intentare causa contro la DeepDiscount, che aveva cominciato la distribuzione prima del 21 luglio. Inizialmente il romanzo ha visto un'enorme impennata raggiungendo nelle primissime ore le 20 milioni di copie, che sono diventate 72 in pochi giorni, battendo ogni record precedentemente fissato sempre dal sesto volume della fortunatissima saga. Il settimo libro è l'unico libro della saga a non iniziare con un imminente ritorno ad Hogwarts: non si assiste al viaggio in treno verso la scuola né alle lezioni che vi si svolgono; non vengono introdotti nuovi personaggi di rilievo, ed alcuni, come la professoressa Minerva McGranitt compariranno solo al trentesimo capitolo, altri faranno solo una fugace apparizione (come nel caso di Sibilla Cooman).
