Harold J. Powers was a liberal Republican Lieutenant Governor of California, having served from 1953-1959 under fellow liberal Republican Governor Goodwin J. Knight. In 1962, Powers attracted political attention by his refusal to endorse Richard M. Nixon for governor in the general election contest that year against the Democrat Edmund G. "Pat" Brown, Sr.
