- Harley Swedler (born 1962, Ottawa, Canada) is a New York based architect, artist, designer, chef, and blogger. Upon completing his studies in Canada and Italy, Harley swedler began his architectural career at the offices of Pasanella + Klein, where he was involved in the renovation of Joan Rivers' Manhattan pied-a-terre. He completed his licensing requirements while working at Richard Meier and Partners Architects (on projects in Europe and North America). Upon becoming a New York State registered professional, Mr. Swedler opened his own design atelier in Tribeca. He began creating functional art objects for private collectors, and his pieces were noted in The New York Times and international design magazines. His work was acquired by The Jewish Museum for its permanent collection. A line of house wares was later introduced under the HARLEY label; it was distributed through the Guggenheim Museum shops, Fred Segal and Nordstroms. The commercial products were widely editorialized in magazines such as In Style, Metropolitan Home and Elle. Harley eventually relocated his studio to his Long Island home. The glass and steel JAM House was extensively published upon its completion, featuring in such publications as Interior Design magazine and Martha Stewart Living. Mr. Swedler gained notoriety as a self-taught chef, with an emphasis on pastry arts, and provided in-house catering for photo shoots. While volunteering his time as an architect for the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (ASYV) in Rwanda, Mr. Swedler introduced a blog detailing his experiences in East Africa. The internet based articles garnered a huge following, prompting the author to write a book based on his family's involvement with breast cancer. In the midst of finishing this work, Harley became more actively involved with Susan G. Komen for the Cure (SGK), a breast cancer advocacy and outreach organization. SGK had partnered with Joint Distribution Committee, the non-governmental organization which was spearheading the project in Rwanda - and the fit was timely. In 2008 Harley Swedler was honored as the Susan G. Komen 'Co-Survivor' for his literary efforts in putting out a male perspecitve on the effects of breast cancer on women and their families. Mr. Swedler continues his professional endeavors in the fields of architecture, art, and design, and writes daily on a wide variety of topics. In addition to his culinary pursuits, he continues to be actively involved in organizations which provide outreach and assistance to the disenfranchised.
