- Hans Hellmut Kirst was a distinguished German author from Osterode, East Prussia who wrote many books which have been translated into English. Kirst, a World War II veteran, had his first success with the Gunner Asch series of novels. Published in German as the trilogy; "Band: 08/15 in der Kaserne, 1954", "Band: 08/15 im Krieg, 1954", and "Band: 08/15 bis zum Ende, 1955", and later followed up with the novels, "08/15 heute, 1963" and "08/15 in der Partei, 1978", they follow the career of a soldier from before World War II, to the Eastern Front, and finally to post-war Germany. The books were published in English as: "The Revolt of Gunner Asch" [1955] "Forward, Gunner Asch!" [1956] (also published as "Gunner Asch Goes to War") "The Return of Gunner Asch" [1957] "What Became of Gunner Asch" [1964] At the end of the war, Asch was a Lieutenant as Kirst was. Kirst wrote other novels about the corruption of Germany and its armed forces by Nazism. Kirst's best known work is "The Night of the Generals" (published in German as "Die Nacht der Generale," 1962) about an investigation into a series of murders of prostitutes during and after World War II. The book was made into the successful 1967 film of the same name. Other major novels by Kirst set during the Third Reich and World War II include; "Officer Factory" (published in German as "Fabrik der Offiziere, 1960") about the investigation into the death of a training officer in an Officer School near the end of World War II, "The Castle", "Camp Seven Next Stop", "The Fox of Maulen" (subsequently re-named "The Wolves") and "The Nights of the Long Knives" (about a fictitious SS squad of six hit men). All of these novels were translated by J Maxwell Brownjohn and show Kirst's unique blend of deadpan humour and devastating satire. Characters are often shown positioning themselves as outspoken ardent Nazis during the Third Reich era, and than being equally ardent in claiming to have been anti-Nazi -- and to be 100% pro-democracy or pro-communist, whichever is to their advantage -- after the end of the Nazi era. Kirst's non-World War II themed novels include; "The Seventh Day", a nuclear holocaust story that received worldwide acclaim and was dubbed "so convincing, that it doesn't seem like fiction at all", and "Die letzte Karte spielt der Tod, 1955", a fictional account of the life of Soviet spy Richard Sorge that was published in English as "The Last Card" and "Death Plays the Last Card". Kirst also wrote a series of detective novels set in Munich in the 1960s and published in English translations as "Damned to Success" (and also as "A Time for Scandal"), "A Time for Truth", and "Everything has a Price".

En 1932, il travaillait au service de comptabilité de la ferme de la famille noble (’’Rittergut’’) Mühlen. Conformément à la volonté de son père, il se fit soldat de carrière en 1933 dans la Reichswehr puis fut stationné au régiment de défense antiaérienne de la Wehrmacht près de Königsberg. Il obtint en quelques années les grades d’adjudant et d’adjudant chef. Au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Kirst devint d’abord sous-lieutenant puis lieutenant et de 1944 à 1945 officier cadre national-socialiste et enseigna l’histoire de la guerre à l’école de la Flak de Altenstadt en Haute-Bavière. L’ancien ministre de la défense allemand (et chef du parti majoritaire conservateur en Bavière) Franz Josef Strauss (FJS) avait été son prédécesseur à Altenstadt et le dénonça auprès des troupes américaines en 1945 comme nazi. Kirst passa alors neuf mois dans un camp d’internement américain à Garmisch. C’est là qu’il fit ses premiers essais littéraires. Il en sortit lavé de tout soupçon mais FJS en tant que président de la chambre du tribunal le condamna cependant malgré tout à deux ans d’interdiction de publication. C’est de cette époque que datent les luttes exacerbées qui durèrent des années entre eux. En 1947, Kirst rejoignit Munich et vécut tout d’abord de menus travaux (jardinier, cantonnier, dramaturge, préposé aux écritures de la municipalité) avant de devenir critique littéraire au joural Münchner Mittag. Il publia son premier roman Wir nannten ihn Galgenstrick (trad. littérale « On l’appelait Corde-de-pendu ») en 1950. Il connut la célébrité en 1954 avec sa trilogie 08/15 qui relate de manière très critique la vie de caserne, la guerre puis le retour à la vie civile. Kirst écrivit au total environ 60 romans. Il publia aussi des romans policiers et fut en même temps au centre de la discussion concernant le passé nazi de l’Allemagne, ses détracteurs lui reprochant de n’écrire que des histoires sans grande valeur littéraire. Au cours des années 1950, il s’engagea très énergiquement contre la remilitarisation de l’Allemagne, ce qui lui attira les foudres du ministre de la défense FJS. En 1960 et 1962, deux autres romans connurent un grand succès mondiaux (La Fabrique des officiers et La Nuit des généraux) qui furent aussi portés à l’écran. Il utilisa une bonne partie de ses honoraires au profit d’œuvres humanitaires, entre autres en Israël, pour les veuves de guerre en Pologne et pour les étudiants en Norvège. En 1961, il épousa l’actrice Ruth Müller et vécut avec leur fille à Feldafing au bord du lac de Starnberg. Il créa en 1967, pour le 100ème anniversaire du romancier et satirique bavarois Ludwig Thoma une médaille destinée à récompenser les mérites sociaux. À partir de 1969, il travailla aussi comme critique de cinéma pour la deuxième chaîne de télévision allemande à Mayence (émission intitulée Ratschlag für Kinogänger / Conseils pour vos soirées cinéma). Kirst a publié des critiques dans le quotidien munichois Abendzeitung de 1972 à 1975. En 1987, très marqué par la maladie, il alla s’installer à Werdum en Frise orientale où il décéda le 23 février 1989.

Hij bezocht het Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Ostroda, waarna hij naar de handelsschool ging. In 1933 nam hij dienst in de Reichswehr in Koningsbergen. In 1935 werd hij bevorderd tot onderofficier en in 1937 tot wachtmeester. In 1939 diende hij als opperwachtmeester bij de inval van Polen en was later bij de aanval op Frankrijk. In 1941 viel hij met de Wehrmacht de Sowjet-Unie binnen. In 1943 kreeg hij zijn bevordering tot luitenant. Van 1943 tot 1945 gaf hij les in krijgsgeschiedenis in Schönau en werd uiteindelijk kapitein en leider van de stadsbatterij. Kirst had na zijn belevenissen in de Tweede Wereldoorlog veel succes met het schrijven van de Gunner Asch-romanserie. In Duitsland waren de eerste titels 08/15 in der Kaserne, 1954, 08/15 im Krieg, 1954 en 08/15 bis zum Ende, 1955 en later 08/15 heute, 1963 en 08/15 in der Partei, 1978. Deze romans volgen het leven van een soldaat van voor de oorlog, aan het oostelijk front en daarna in het na-oorlogse Duitsland. In 1962 verscheen wat als zijn beste werk werd geprezen, namelijk Die Nacht der Generale; het werd in 1967 verfilmd. Op 14 december 1961 trouwde Kirst met de actrice Ruth Müller. Met zijn vrouw en zijn dochter Beatrice leefde hij teruggetrokken in Feldafing aan de Starnberger See. Later zou hij naar Werdum in Oost Friesland verhuizen. In totaal schreef Kirst zestig romans en een aantal detectiveverhalen.
