- Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical is a rock musical with a book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot. A product of the hippie counter-culture and sexual revolution of the 1960s, several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement. The musical's profanity, its depiction of the use of illegal drugs, its treatment of sexuality, its irreverence for the American flag, and its nude scene caused much comment and controversy. The musical broke new ground in musical theatre by defining the genre of "rock musical", using a racially-integrated cast, and inviting the audience onstage for a "Be-In" finale. Hair tells the story of the "tribe", a group of politically active, long-haired hippies of the "Age of Aquarius" living a bohemian life in New York City and fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War. Claude, his good friend Berger, their roommate Sheila and their friends struggle to balance their young lives, loves and the sexual revolution with their rebellion against the war and their conservative parents and society. Ultimately, Claude must decide whether to resist the draft as his friends have done, or to compromise his pacifistic principles and risk his life by serving in Vietnam. After an off-Broadway debut in October 1967 at Joseph Papp's Public Theater and a subsequent run in a midtown discothèque space, the show opened on Broadway in April 1968 and ran for 1,750 performances. Simultaneous productions in cities across the United States and Europe followed shortly thereafter, including a successful London production, which ran for 1,997 performances. Since then, numerous productions have been staged around the world, spawning dozens of recordings of the musical. Some of the songs from its score became Top 10 hits, and a feature film adaptation was released in 1979. A Broadway revival opened on March 31, 2009, earning strong reviews and winning the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for best revival of a musical. In 2008, Time magazine wrote, "Today Hair seems, if anything, more daring than ever."

En 1979 se produjo una película basada en el musical y con el mismo nombre, dirigida por Milos Forman y protagonizada por Treat Williams, Beverly D'Angelo y John Savage. La banda sonora, tanto de la obra teatral como de la película, ha sido editada en los distintos formatos habidos desde su estreno.

Varsinainen suurmenestys alkoi New Yorkissa Biltmore Theatressa Broadwaylla jossa ensi-ilta oli 29. toukokuuta 1968. Miespääosissa nähtiin kirjoittajat Rado Claudena ja Ragni Bergerinä. Naispääosan tulkitsi Lynn Kellogg. Musikaali esitettiin 1 729 kertaa ja jäähyväisnäytös oli 1. heinäkuuta 1972. Musikaalin pohjalta tehty elokuva ilmestyi vuonna 1979. Ohjaajana oli Milos Forman ja pääosissa John Savage, Treat Williams ja Annie Golden. Elokuvassa on mukana alkuperäisen musikaalin näyttelijöihin kuulunut Melba Moore kappaleessa "3-5-0-0". Hairia on esitetty Suomessa useita kertoja. Tampereen Popteatteri esitti versionsa ensimmäistä kertaa Tampereen 1. Teatterikesässä 6.8.1969. Version esitysoikeudet Yhdysvalloista hankki Reijo Paukku kuultuaan siitä sattumalta etsiessään uutta ohjelmistoa. Musikaalin sanoitti suomeksi Esko Elstelä. Suunnitellut esitykset myytiin loppuun jo ennen ensi-iltaa. Musikaali siirtyi Teatterikesän päätyttyä vierailevana Tampereen Teatteriin. Ryhmä esitti musikaalia myös Suomen-kiertueella. Taustat versiossa soitti urkuri Risto Hiltusella ja saksofonisti Risto Tannerilla vahvistettu Matthews - yhtye . Viimeinen esitys oli Elokuussa 1971 Tampereen Teatterikesässä. Musikaali herätti kohua tuolloin uskaliaalla alastonkohtauksella, vaikka se kuului oleellisesti musikaalin juoneen. Kohtaus arvelutti myös näyttelijöitä vaatien muuutamia esityskertoja ennen tarkoitettua toteutusta. "Ei se alastomuus autuaaksi tehnyt. Kyllä Hairia tultiin katsomaan ihan muista syistä. Jos alastomuus todella olisi ollut hitin syy, eikö olisi kannattanut tehdä koko kaksituntinen esitys ilman vaatteita?(Rauli Koivisto 2009)" Helsingin Svenska Teaternissa vuonna 1969 esitetyssä ruotsinkielisessä Hair-versiossa Hår esiintyivät mm. Anki ja Hector. Musikaaliesityksen taustat soitti saksofonisti Eero Koivistoisella ja trumpetisti Mike Koskisella vahvistettu Wigwam Kapellimestarina toimi Sakari Lehtonen. Anki joka oli valittu Sheilan rooliin sekä Hector kiersivät Manner-Euroopassa katsomassa useita Hair-versioita tuotantovaiheen aikana. Versio ei ollut teatterin omaa tuotantoa, vaan teatteri vuokrasi tilat ryhmälle. Osa esiintyjistä perusti musikaalin jälkeen Cumulus-yhtyeen. Vuonna 2003 Marco Bjurström ohjasi Hairin Linnanmäen Peacock-teatteriin. Tämä esitettiin niin ikään Suomen kiertueella. Marco Bjurströmin ohjauksen sanoitti uudelleen Markku Salo. Musikaali on levytetty nimellä Original Cast - Hair. Tampereen Popteatterin Hair on levytetty kuten myös Lontoon Hair. Elokuvaversion soundtrack on myös julkaistu levynä. Musikaalin lauluja ovat mm. "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" suomeksi "Aquarius/Kuljen valoon kuljen Aurinkoon" (Esko Elstelä) sekä "Good Morning Starshine". Edellinen oli hitti 5th Dimension - lauluyhtyeelle sekä Kristianille. Nimensä mukaisesti kappale on yhdistelmä musikaalin avausnumerosta "Aquarius" ja päätöskappaleesta "Flesh Failures(Let the Sun Shine In)". Tampereen pop-teatterin single "Aquarius" b- puolenaan "Kulje valoon, kulje Aurinkoon" nousi samanaikaisesti sijalle 19. Problems? -yhtye teki kappaleesta 1980 Pelle Miljoonan sanoittaman ja Tumppi Varosen laulaman version nimellä "Lanka palaa. " "Good Morning Starshine" suomeksi "Hei tähdet taivaan"(Elstelä) oli hitti yhdysvaltalaiselle Oliver - laulaja/lauluntekijälle. Myös lukuisat muut artistit tekivät musikaalin kappaleista omia versioitaan ja hittejä. Tampereen Popteatterin versio nousi Suomen LP-listalla sijalle 3.

Dopo un debutto off-Broadway (che non si svolse, cioè, a Broadway) nell'ottobre del 1967 al Public Theater fondato da Joseph Papp e una replica in una discoteca della Midtown di Manhattan, lo show esordì a Broadway al Biltmore Theatre il 29 aprile del 1968. A questo esordio seguirono 1750 performance. Seguì, a breve distanza, una produzione londinese (1997 repliche). Da allora, numerosissime sono state le produzioni teatrali e musicali in tutto il mondo. Molte delle canzoni tratte dal musical hanno raggiunto la Top Forty. Una riduzione cinematografica è stata diretta da Miloš Forman nel 1979. Hair racconta la storia di un gruppo politicamente attivo di "capelloni" (the tribe), "hippies dell'età dell'Aquario", che combattono la coscrizione alla guerra del Vietnam e conducono insieme una vie de bohème a New York. La loro lotta ruota intorno al tentativo di creare un equilibrio tra l'armonia della vita comunitaria e i nuovi valori promossi dalla rivoluzione sessuale, da un lato, e la ribellione pacifica contro la guerra e i valori conservatori dei genitori e della società, dall'altro. Claude, uno dei leader della tribe, deve decidere se rigettare gli obblighi di leva, così come hanno fatto i suoi amici.

In Nederland was de première van deze musical op 2 januari 1970 in een grote tent naast het Olympisch Stadion van Amsterdam. De acteurs kwamen voornamelijk uit de Engelse cast, maar ook de Nederlandse Bill van Dijk ('Claude') en Natascha Emanuels ('Jeanie') spelen mee. De begeleidingsband bestaat o.a. uit Jan Akkerman, Hans Cleuver, Thijs van Leer en spelers uit het VARA Dansorkest.

Urpremiären, i New York, ägde rum, off-Broadway, den 17 oktober 1967. I april 1968 flyttade den till Broadway, Biltmore Theatre, där den gick i 1.873 föreställningar. Musikalen vållade stor uppståndelse då nakenhet förekom i några scener, något som blev ett rättsärende då föreställningen lämnade New York. Många av musikalens låtar är välkända såsom "Aquarius", "Easy to Be Hard", "Good Morning Starshine" och "Let the Sunshine In". Musikalen kom till Sverige, hösten 1968 och spelades på Scala i Stockholm, det var f. ö. Europapremiär. Pierre Fränckel hade översatt (sv. titeln var Hår) och han svarade även för regin. Som musikalisk ledare fungerade Bengt-Arne Wallin. i ensemblen fanns bl.a. Bill Öhrström, Ulf Brunnberg, Charlie Elvegård, Hawkey Franzén, Kisa Magnusson,Anna Bella Munter,Jane Sannemo,Sten-Erik Moberg och Bruno Wintzell. Den spelades i 134 föreställningar. En filmversion av Hair kom 1979, i regi av Miloš Forman. Där medverkade bl.a. John Savage, Treat Williams och Beverly D'Angelo.
