Whilst studying Indology at Leiden University he became associated with the rightist professor Gerardus Johannes Petrus Josephus Bolland and upon leaving university in 1924 set up the country's first fascist movement, the Verbond van Actualisten, with Alfred Haighton. Alongside this he worked as a journalist for De Vaderlander and as a strike breaker.

- Hugues Alexandre Sinclair de Rochemont was a Dutch fascist and later a collaborator with the Nazis. Whilst studying Indology at Leiden University he became associated with the rightist professor Gerardus Johannes Petrus Josephus Bolland and upon leaving university in 1924 set up the country's first fascist movement, the Verbond van Actualisten, with Alfred Haighton. Alongside this he worked as a journalist for De Vaderlander and as a strike breaker. In 1927 he began editing De Bezem (The Broom), a fascist journal aimed at the working classes and continued to publish under this name after 1930, when he split from Haighton. Having split from Haighton he became associated with Joris Van Severen of Belgium, although most of his time was given over to his work as a civil servant and then as an antiquarian bookseller. He joined both the National Front and the National Socialist Dutch Workers Party in 1940, having become fully convinced of Nazism, even to the point of accepting the incorporation of Holland into the Third Reich. After spells in prison for homosexuality and attempting to assassinate Anton Mussert Sinclair volunteered for the Schutzstaffel and was killed on active duty near Grisi in the Soviet Union.

Het tweede deel van zijn familienaam zou hij later in zijn leven meestal weglaten. Sinclair, voor zijn vrienden 'Zinkie', studeerde indologie in Leiden. Deze studie beëindigde hij echter toen hij afgekeurd werd voor overheidsdienst in Nederlandsch-Indië. Hoewel Sinclair met zijn studie begon in de maand waarin de Leidse hoogleraar dr. G.J.P.J. Bolland zijn academische carrière beëindigde, zou Sinclair diepgaand door de opvattingen van deze aartsconservatief worden beïnvloed. De antidemocratische opvattingen van Bolland hebben hun doorwerking gevonden in het beginselprogramma van het Verbond van Actualisten (VvA), dat Sinclair in 1922, samen met onder anderen Alfred Haighton oprichtte. Dit verbond was de eerste fascistische politieke partij in Nederland. Bollands antisemitische opvattingen kwamen overigens in het programma van het VvA niet voor. Een tijdlang was Sinclair de feitelijke ideoloog van het VvA. Ook werd hij redacteur van De Vaderlander, het weekblad van het VvA. Zijn tijdgenoten omschreven Sinclair als een man van grote intelligentie, maar met weinig contactuele vaardigheden, die daardoor moeilijk in de omgang was. Hij toonde zelden emoties en spaarde in gesprekken niemand met zijn kritische opmerkingen. Hij werd gekenschetst als een melancholicus, die moeilijk voor zichzelf was maar zeker ook voor anderen. Een zeker esthetisch gevoel moet hem echter hebben gekenmerkt, want onder het pseudoniem H. Asder schreef hij gedichten. Daarnaast was hij een romanticus die van samenzweren hield. Kortom: geen man voor de alledaagse praktijk van de politiek. Na het roemloze einde van het Verbond van Actualisten participeerde Sinclair nog in menige andere rechts-radicale politieke beweging. In de loop van de jaren dertig echter raakte hij steeds meer in een politiek en maatschappelijk isolement verzeild. Hij ontwikkelde zich tot een fanatiek vertegenwoordiger van de SS-richting in het Duitse nationaalsocialisme. Na de Duitse inval in mei 1940 meldde Sinclair zich bij het Vrijwilligers Legioen Nederland. Als 'Sturmmann' in de Waffen-SS, drager van het IJzeren Kruis, 2 klasse, sneuvelde hij aan het Russische Oostfront, nabij Leningrad.
