- Gypsy punk is the term used to describe a hybrid musical genre that crosses traditional Roma music with punk rock and other brands of rebel music. The origin of the term is unknown, but bands playing Gypsy punk have existed at least since the 1990s. The term became well-known to a broader audience after the band Gogol Bordello released the album Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike, with front man Eugene Hütz describing their performance as a "Gypsy Punk Cabaret". The term has also been subject to the debate that it exploits Roma culture. Gogol Bordello have since insisted it was just the name of their album, which was then taken and used by the music press as a term to define the genre of their music and similar artists - not an offshoot term for authentic gypsy music. Gypsy punk bands usually combine rock beats and instrumentation with more traditional Gypsy instrumentation such as drums, tambourine, accordion, fiddle, trumpet, and saxophone. In addition, due to the varied ethnic makeup of the Gypsy culture, many bands sing in several different languages, often switching language multiple times within a single song.

Poprvé ho použil romský hudebník Eugene Hütz, když popisoval svou skupinu Gogol Bordello pro jeden místní newyorský tisk. Většina gypsy punkových skupin působí ve Spojených státech amerických, nicméně její členové převážně pocházejí z Balkánu a ze zemí východní Evropy. V 80. a 90. letech se v Sarajevu rozvíjelo hnutí nového primitivismu zahrnující skupinu Zabranjeno Pušenje, zpětně započítávanou do gypsy punku. Gypsy punkové skupiny zapojují do svých skladeb také housle, trumpetu, saxofon, akordeon, tamburínu a jiné.

Le gypsy punk band spesso combinano i ritmi e le strumentazioni tipiche del rock, con strumenti tipici delle culture dell'est Europa come fisarmonica, fiddle, tromba e sassofono. Spesso questo genere può essere cantato in diverse lingue. I maggiori esponenti del genere sono i Gogol Bordello (che peraltro per primi hanno iniziato ad utilizzare il termine "gypsy punk" in riferimento al proprio stile musicale).

Termenul a fost folosit prima dată de către Eugene Hütz, referitor la trupa sa, Gogol Bordello. Trupe reprezentative pentru acest gen sunt Gogol Bordello, DeVotchKa, Haydamaky, J.U.F. , Golem, Zydepunks, Kultur Shock, Jason Webley, într-o oarecare măsură, Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestra şi Alamaailman Vasarat. Trupele de punk ţigănesc combină, în general, ritmuri de muzică rock cu instrumente tradiţionale din lumea ţigănească, cum sunt vioara, acordeonul, trompeta şi saxofonul. În plus, având în vedere marea varietate culturala a rromilor, multe formaţii folosesec multe limbi în versurile lor, adesea schimbând limba în care se vorbeşte de mai multe ori în acelasi cântec.
