- Gwar (usually typeset as GWAR) is a Grammy Award-nominated thrash metal band formed in Richmond, Virginia in 1985. The band is best known for their elaborate sci-fi/horror film inspired costumes; raunchy, obscene lyrics; and graphic stage performances, which consist of humorous re-enactments of political and moral taboo themes.

Ihre Kostüme werden hauptsächlich aus Schaumstoff, Schaumpolystyrol und gehärtetem Gummi hergestellt, wobei diese nur wenig von ihren Körpern bedecken. Bei Konzerten besprühen sie das Publikum mit nachgemachtem Blut, Sperma, Urin, Eiter und anderen Körperflüssigkeiten. Die meisten dieser Flüssigkeiten, die sich leicht wieder herauswaschen lassen, bestehen aus Wasser und Lebensmittelfarbe. Sie sehen jedoch von der Nutzung von Sirup als Bestandteil ab, da dieses schnell erhärtet und somit die Kostüme beschädigen könnte. Es kommt auch häufig vor, dass sie Zugaben ohne Kostüme geben. Ein weiteres Markenzeichen von GWARs Live Auftritten ist ihre Verspottung von Prominenten oder anderen Persönlichkeiten aktueller Ereignisse. Dieses geschah bisher zum Leidwesen von O.J. Simpson, John Kerry, George W. Bush, Barack Obama sowie jedem anderen amerikanischen Präsidenten seit Ronald Reagan, Jerry Garcia, Osama Bin Laden, Michael Jackson, Al Gore, Paris Hilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger und vielen weiteren. Die Band nimmt außerdem Bezug auf politische und historische Persönlichkeiten, Fantasyromane und Mythologie. So nimmt beispielsweise das Lied „Whargoul“ Bezug auf Minas Morgul, einem Ort in J.R.R. Tolkiens Herr der Ringe.

Otra características del espectáculo de GWAR es la sátira hacia las celebridades y figuras importantes en eventos actuales. Algunas víctimas de este espectáculo fueron O. J Simpson, John Kerry, Mike Tyson, George W. Bush, Osama Bin Laden, Michael Jackson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Adolf Hitler, entre otros. La banda también hace referencias a varias figuras políticas, históricas, de la mitología y de la literatura fantástica. Adicionalmente, GWAR se inspira en muchos trabajos de H. P. Lovecraft (Antarctica, Yig, Los Pingüinos Gigantes, etc.).

Le nom n'a pas de signification particulière. Le groupe est particulièrement connu pour ses costumes directement inspirés de films de science-fiction et horreur, ses paroles très vulgaires et sa mise en scène morbide recréant de manière semi-humoristique des actes de scatologie, sadomasochisme, nécrophilie, pédophilie, zoophilie, des rituels de danse païens et d'une manière générale tout autre thème violent et/ou politiquement controversé.

Lo stile tipico della band aprì la pista a gruppi come i Lordi, con i quali, nel 2007, hanno intrapreso una rivalità sulla band che per prima abbia creato costumi horrorifici. I temi trattati sono una fusione tra "quelli" classici dei generi suonati ma prendono spunto anche dal grindcore. I loro costumi sono fatti di schiuma di lattice indurita. Nei loro concerti spruzzano verso i presenti finto sangue, solitamente costituiti da materiali ecologici. Occasionalmente il gruppo ha anche suonato senza costumi. Altro tipico comportamento del complesso è il parlare in maniere critica della società e di alcuni personaggi famosi, tra cui: O.J. Simpson, John Kerry, George W. Bush (come pure tutti gli altri presidenti Statunitensi a partire da Ronald Reagan), Jerry Garcia, Osama Bin Laden, Michael Jackson, Al Gore, Paris Hilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Adolf Hitler; inoltre ironizza anche verso personaggi storici e mitologici (ad esempio, la canzone "Whargoul" fa riferimento a Minas Morgul, il guerriero di Michael Moorcock), oppure l'album Ragnarök prende il nome della battaglia finale tra il bene ed il male della mitologia norrena.
