Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone (9 July 1925 – 10 October 1964), popularly known as Guru Dutt, was an Indian film director, producer and actor. He is often credited with ushering in the golden era of Hindi cinema. He made quintessential 1950s and 1960s classics such as Pyaasa (Thirsty), Kaagaz Ke Phool (Paper Flowers), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (The King, the Queen and the Jack) and Chaudhvin Ka Chand (The Fourteenth Day Moon).

Several of his later works have a cult following. His movies go full house when re-released; especially in Germany, France and Japan. The latest book on him is Ten Years with Guru Dutt: Abrar Alvi's Journey by Sathya Saran based on the recollections of his chief scriptwriter and friend.

Guru Dutt Shivsankar Padukone est né à Bangalore, de Shivsankar Rao Padukone, instituteur, et de Vasanthi Padukone, mère au foyer âgée de seulement 16 ans à l'époque, mais qui deviendra elle-même institutrice et traductrice. La famille modeste déménage à Bhawanipore près de Calcutta, où Guru Dutt poursuit ses études. En 1941, à 16 ans, il rejoint le centre de formation d'Uday Shankar, (frère aîné de Ravi Shankar) pour se consacrer pendant 5 ans à l'apprentissage de la danse, de la musique et du théâtre. Il n'ira pas jusqu'au bout, puisqu'en 1944, le centre est fermé à l'approche de la Seconde guerre mondiale. Son oncle lui procure alors un contrat de 3 ans avec les studios Prabhat à Poona.
