- Guggenheim Fellowships are American grants that have been awarded annually since 1925 by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to those "who have demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. " Each year, the foundation makes multiple awards in each of two separate competitions: one open to citizens or permanent residents of Canada or the United States the other to citizens and permanent residents of Latin America or the Caribbean. The performing arts are excluded, although composers, film directors, and choreographers are eligible. The fellowships are not open to students, only to "advanced professionals in mid-career" such as published authors. The fellows may spend the money as they see fit, as the purpose is to give fellows "blocks of time in which they can work with as much creative freedom as possible", but they should also be "substantially free of their regular duties". Applicants are required to submit references as well as a CV and portfolio. The Foundation receives between 3,500 and 4,000 applications each year. Approximately 220 Fellowships are awarded each year. The amounts of grants vary and will be adjusted to the needs of Fellows, considering their other resources and the purpose and scope of their plans. The average amount of Fellowship grants in the 2008 United States and Canada competition was approximately $43,200.

Das renommierte Stipendium ist an erfahrene Berufstätige in der Mitte ihrer Laufbahn (mid-career) gerichtet. In zwei getrennten Ausschreibungen wird jedes Jahr der Großteil der Stipendien an Nordamerikaner, ein kleinerer Anteil an Lateinamerikaner und karibische Staatsbürger vergeben. Stipendiaten werden in der Regel für sechs oder zwölf Monate, in Ausnahmefällen auch länger gefördert. Diese Zeit soll den Geförderten die Möglichkeit geben, ihre Arbeit mit größtmöglicher schöpferischer Freiheit durchzuführen; die Förderung soll nicht für Weiterbildungen genutzt werden. Zu den Stipendiaten (Guggenheim Fellows) haben mehrere Nobelpreisträger, Pulitzerpreisträger und Preisträger anderer angesehener Auszeichnungen gehört. Gefördert wurden unter anderem der US-amerikanische Schriftsteller John Updike (1959), der taiwanesische und zeitweilig die US-amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft innehabende Chemiker Yuan T. Lee (1977; Nobelpreis 1986) und der US-amerikanische Physiker Carl E. Wieman (1990–1991; Nobelpreis 2001). Die John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation wurde 1925 zum Zweck der Stipendienvergabe von dem US-amerikanischen Geschäftsmann und Politiker Simon Guggenheim und seiner Frau im Gedächtnis an ihren am 26. April 1922 gestorbenen Sohn John Simon Guggenheim gegründet. Simon Guggenheim war der jüngere Bruder von Solomon R. Guggenheim, der die Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation gründete, der weltweit die Guggenheim-Museen (z. B. das Guggenheim-Museum in New York) gehören. Die beiden Stiftungen stehen aber in keinem Zusammenhang.

Chaque année, la fondation apporte de multiples prix dans chacune des deux compétitions : l'une est ouverte aux citoyens et aux résidents permanents du Canada et des États-Unis l'autre est ouverte aux citoyens et aux résidents permanents de l'Amérique latine et des Caraïbes La récompense ne peut être remise qu'aux seuls professionnels (et non à des étudiants ou à des amateurs) lorsqu'ils sont à mi-carrière. Les boursiers peuvent dépenser l'argent comme ils l'entendent - le but étant de leur apporter la liberté de créer et de continuer leur travail dans de bonnes conditions financières.
