La edición original de Martínez Roca en España respetaba los signos de puntuación de la novela original (Guards! Guards!), pero Plaza & Janés decidió cambiar el segundo por una interrogación. El primer texto de contraportada de esta editorial, en el año 2000, hablaba de un ejército de enanos que se disponía a invadir la ciudad de Ankh-Morpork, cosa que no tiene nada que ver con el argumento de la novela. Se solucionó en posteriores ediciones del libro.

In het begin van het verhaal heeft de nachtwacht nog maar drie leden, heeft de wacht geen enkel gezag en wordt er al over gedacht om de wacht maar op te heffen. De komst van de "dwerg" Biet als nieuwkomer in de wacht en de hieronder beschreven gebeurtenissen zorgen ervoor dat de bevolking van de stad weer respect voor de wacht krijgt. In de volgende delen zal de wacht dan ook steeds verder worden uitgebreid.

Jest to ósma część długiego cyklu Świat Dysku, będąca przy tym pierwszą częścią podcyklu o Straży Miejskiej. Głównym bohaterem książki jest najwyższy krasnolud świata - Marchewa Żelaznywładsson. Z pewnym zaskoczeniem dowiaduje się on od ojca, że jest człowiekiem, wychowanym przez krasnoludy. Aby uniknąć kłopotów w dotychczasowym domu, zostaje on wysłany do Ankh-Morpork, gdzie wstępuje do lokalnej Straży Miejskiej. Wspólnie z innymi strażnikami - cynicznym komendantem Samuelem Vimesem, sierżantem Fredem Colonem, oraz Nobby'm Nobsem (szczęśliwym posiadaczem papierów potwierdzających przynależność do rasy ludzkiej) poznaje zawiłości codziennego życia Ankh-Morpork, przywracając przy tym do życia wiele martwych przepisów prawa. W tym samym czasie paru ludzi przywołuje smoka, za pomocą którego chce przejąć władzę w mieście. Marchewa ze swoimi kompanami, oraz przy pomocy pewnego orangutana oraz pewnej (dość otyłej) damy, walczą ze zbrodnią - z pewnością nie obędzie się bez szturchania pośladków.
