- Growl is a global notification system for the Mac OS X operating system. Applications can use Growl to display small notifications about events which the user deems important, in a consistent manner. This allows users to fully control their notifications, application developers to spend little time creating notifications, and Growl developers to concentrate on the usability of notifications. Growl installs itself as a preference pane added to the Mac OS X System Preferences. This pane enables and disables Growl's notifications for certain applications entirely, or select specific notifications for each application. Applications register a "ticket" with Growl, then send arbitrary notifications which Growl receives and displays. Each notification provides some information, such as: "Download finished," or the name of the current iTunes track. Users can customize the display and turn notifications on and off. Growl includes bindings for developers who use the PHP, Objective-C, C, Perl, Python, Tcl, AppleScript, Java, and Ruby programming languages, and comes with multiple "display plugins," providing different styles for presenting the notifications. The Growl Project website has a list of applications that support Growl, either inherently or through add-ons. Plugins or scripts exist to add Growl notifications to iChat, Mail, Thunderbird, Safari, and iTunes (GrowlTunes).

Die Prioritäten dieser kann der Benutzer vollständig konfigurieren. So müssen Softwareentwickler keine eigenen Benachrichtigungssysteme mehr entwerfen, sondern die Meldungen nur noch an Growl weitergeben. Growl ist eigentlich ein aus Mac OS 9 (und früher) stammendes Feature. Dort wurde der Benutzer ebenfalls systemweit darüber informiert wenn ein Programm die Aufmerksamkeit des Benutzers benötigte. Mit Growl kompatible Programme senden kurze Signale, wie zum Beispiel „Download beendet“ oder den gerade gespielten iTunes-Song, die dann als Growl-Benachrichtigung im vom Benutzer ausgewählten Stil angezeigt wird. Growl bietet Schnittstellen für Entwickler, die die Programmiersprachen Objective-C, C, Perl, Python, Tcl, AppleScript, Java und Ruby benutzen.

Le applicazioni possono utilizzare Growl per mostrare una piccola notifica su eventi che vengono considerati importanti dall'utente. Questo permette agli utenti di avere un controllo totale delle proprie notifiche, ai programmatori delle applicazioni di spendere poco tempo per creare le notifiche, e agli sviluppatori di Growl di concentrarsi sulla perfetta funzionalità delle notifiche. Growl si installa come un'icona tra le preferenze di sistema di Mac OS X. Si possono abilitare o disabilitare completamente le notifiche per le applicazioni supportate, o attivarne soltanto alcune. Al primo avvio le applicazioni si registrano a Growl e successivamente gli inviano le notifiche che a sua volta le riceve e le visualizza. Le informazioni sono del tipo "Download completato" o il nome della traccia audio in ascolto. Gli utenti possono personalizzare e/o abilitare le notifiche a proprio piacimento.
- Growl é um programa livre de notificação para o sistema operacional Mac OS X. A função principal do programa é notificar o usuário quando acontece determinada modificação nos programas suportados (veja lista abaixo). Por exemplo, quando uma transferência é completa no Firefox, o Growl notifica visualmente o usuário com uma pequena 'janela' de notificação) no canto superior direito (por padrão, podendo o canto ser modificado pelo usuário). O mesmo ocorre, por exemplo, com as músicas que tocam no iTunes por exemplo, mensagens de correio eletrônico recebidas, contatos do Adium etc. Suporta os mais populares programas para Mac OS X, dentre os quais: iTunes, Mail, Safari, Firefox (a versão mais recente, Firefox 3), Transmit, VLC media player, Adium, Cyberduck, Transmission etc. É compatível com mais de 200 aplicativos. O programa é traduzido para o Português do Brasil por Marcos Frazão. Existem plugins para adicionar suporte ao Growl em notificação para iChat, iTunes (GrowliTunes), Mail, Thunderbird, Safari e Microsoft Entourage. É possível colocar um ícone do Growl na barra de menus do Mac OS X para facilitar. O Growl se instala na painel das Preferências do Sistema. sendo possível ativar ou desativar o Growl através do painel Preferências do Sistema. É possível inicializar o Growl junto com o sistema ou não através do mesmo painel. Bastante flexível, é possível configurar dezenas de opções no programa, como estilos de notificação, cores, cantos escolhidos etc.

Например, системная панель SizzlingKeys добавляет уведомления для плеера iTunes а также дополнительный функционал (настраиваемые «быстрые клавиши» для некоторых операций и др. ) Имеется поддержка достаточное количество настраиваемых стилей уведомления (кроме всплывающих уведомлений присутствует возможность уведомления голосом, отправка sms или e-mail); дополнительные стили можно скачать с сайта разработчика. Распространяется бесплатно по лицензии BSD, встраивается в панель Системных Настроек. Для разработчиков, желающих добавить поддержку уведомлений Growl, доступен небольшой модуль для добавления в программу, который организует взаимодействие с пользовательским модулем, установленным в системе.

Growl ger användaren möjlighet välja vilka meddelanden som ska synas samt hur de ska se ut, och utvecklaren i sin tur behöver inte lägga tid på att själv skapa användarvänliga informationsrutor. I Growls inställningspanel kan inställningar för individuella programs visningsmöjligheter göras. Olika meddelandestilar kan sättas för meddelanden inom samma program och möjligheten finns även att förhindra specifik information från att visas över huvudet taget.
