Grosthuizen is a hamlet in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Wester-Koggenland, and lies about 7 km southwest of Hoorn . Grosthuizen was a separate municipality between 1817 and 1854, when it was merged with Avenhorn. The statistical area "Grosthuizen", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 410.

Het oostelijk deel valt formeel onder Grosthuizen. Bij de grens met de buurtschap en het eigenlijke dorp loopt de Slimdijk die naar het zuidelijk van Grosthuizen gelegen Oudendijk loopt. Grosthuizen was tot 13 april 1854 een zelfstandige gemeente. Na de opheffing van de gemeente behoorde Grosthuizen tot de gemeente Avenhorn, die zelf in 1979 opging in de gemeente Wester-Koggenland. En sinds 1 januari 2007 is de gemeente Wester-Koggeland gefuseerd tot de gemeente Koggenland. Het dorp heette vroeger Groot Oosthuizen, de plaatsnaam was een verduidelijking van de grotere plaats was dan Klein-Oosthuizen wat thans Oosthuizen wordt genoemd, dat in de gemeente Zeevang is gelegen. Rond 1200 wordt de plaats gemeld als Asthuza Major, wat grof vertaald Oosthuizen Groot betekent. In 1388 komt de plaats als Groot-Oesthuzen voor en in 1745 ziet men voor het eerst dat Oost verdwenen is dat Grost wordt gebruikt, de benaming is dan Grosthuyzen De benaming is waarschijnlijk een samentrekking van Groôtsk en huizen naar grosthuizen, lokaal ook wel Grosthuzen, waarbij Oost verdween. Langs het noordelijke deel van het dorp loopt het water Grosthuizergouw, deze loopt over de hele lengte van het dorp en sluit met vertakking aan op de trekvaart Alkmaar-Hoorn.
