Selon différents témoins, Preoteasa était la seule personne debout dans l'avion au moment de l'atterrissage.

În anii '30, în decursul studiilor sale universitare, Grigore Preoteasa a aderat iniţial la Frontul Studenţesc Democratic, a devenit membru PCR şi a fost condamnat la puşcărie în repetate rânduri. Grigore Preoteasa a fost arestat împreună cu alţi oponenţi ai regimului Antonescu şi, în perioada frecventelor sale condamnări, s-a apropiat de PCR şi s-a integrat în conducerea sa. Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej l-a simpatizat pe Grigore Preoteasa datorită faptului că l-a cunoscut la muncă pe tatăl acestuia. Grigore Preoteasa a fost redactor responsabil la ziarul România Liberă (1944 - 1946), Ministru de Externe (1956 - 1957) şi membru supleant al Biroului Politic şi Secretar al C.C. al P.C.R. Grigore Preoteasa a decedat în cursul unui accident de avion care s-a petrecut la Moscova pe data de 4 noiembrie 1957.
