Despite being based in Scotland, the club participated in amateur and semi-professional leagues in English football from 1947 until they were elected to the Scottish Football League at the third attempt in 2002. Relying heavily on substantial financial support from businessman Brooks Mileson, the club were promoted through the Scottish leagues from the Third Division to the Scottish Premier League in less than five years. The club also reached the 2006 Scottish Cup Final, losing in a penalty shootout to Hearts. However, the team struggled badly in the SPL and the club were placed in administration after Mileson withdrew his support due to illness. At the end of the season, all of the club's staff were made redundant and the club were initially relegated to the Third Division due to their inability to guarantee fulfilment of their forthcoming fixtures. After this demotion, the one remaining offer to buy the club was withdrawn. The club resigned their place in the Scottish Football League on 3 June and were formally liquidated on 8 August. The club's supporters' trust then decided to establish a new club, Gretna 2008, who were accepted into the East of Scotland Football League on 11 July 2008. Whilst sharing the same fanbase and a similar name, the new club has no legal connection with the original Gretna F.C.

Op 29 april 2007 wist de club een plek bij de voetbalelite te bemachtigen door op de slotdag een 3-2 overwinning op te behalen Ross County in de Scottish First Division. In het seizoen 2005/06 werd de finale van de Schotse beker gehaald en zo werd de club het eerste team uit de 3de klasse dat de finale haalde sinds de oprichting van deze divisie in 1975. In de finale werd verloren van Hearts na verlengingen en een penaltyreeks. Omdat Hearts in de Champions League mocht aantreden speelde Gretna in 2006/07 al Europees voetbal in de UEFA Cup. Het succes van de club kan verklaard worden doordat multimiljonair en clubeigenaar Brooks Mileson de vereniging financieel steunt. De club betaalt de hoogste lonen buiten de Premier League. De club krijgt een nieuw stadion, het oude heeft slechts 2200 plaatsen (terwijl er niet eens 3000 inwoners wonen in Gretna), maar om in de Scottish Premier League te kunnen spelen zijn er 6000 plaatsen vereist. In 2008 ging het financieel en sportief mis voor Gretna. Door ziekte van Mileson kwamen er geen financiële middelen meer binnen, waardoor de club dreigde failliet te gaan. Als gevolg van financieel wanbeleid kreeg de club 10 strafpunten en kon degradatie niet meer ontlopen worden. Door tussenkomst van de Schotse bond die geld voor uitzendrechten voorschoot, kon Gretna toch de competitie afmaken.
