Gretna Football Club were a Scottish football club that represented the town of Gretna, Dumfries and Galloway. Founded in 1946, the club dissolved in 2008 after coming into severe financial difficulties. Despite being based in Scotland, the club participated in English football from 1947 until elected to the Scottish Football League at the third attempt in 2002.

Founded in 1946, the club dissolved in 2008 after coming into severe financial difficulties. Despite being based in Scotland, the club participated in English football from 1947 until elected to the Scottish Football League at the third attempt in 2002. Due to the financial support of businessman Brooks Mileson, the club were promoted through the Scottish leagues from the Third Division side to the Scottish Premier League in less than five years. The club struggled badly in the SPL and were placed in administration after Mileson withdrew his support due to illness. At the end of the season, all of the club's staff were made redundant and the club were initially relegated to the Third Division due to their inability to guarantee fulfilment of their forthcoming fixtures. After this demotion, the one remaining offer to buy the club was withdrawn. The club resigned their place in the Scottish Football League on 3 June and were formally liquidated on 8 August. A supporters' trust formed a new club, Gretna 2008, who were accepted into the East of Scotland Football League on 11 July 2008. Although sharing a common fanbase and similar name, the two clubs have no legal connection.

In der UEFA-Cup Qualifikation scheiterte Gretna mit 1:5 und 2:2 bereits zum Auftakt am irischen Vertreter Derry City. Gretna absolvierte seine Heimspiele traditionell Raydale Park, der mit offiziell 2.200 Plätzen beinahe so vielen Zuschauern Platz bietet, wie Gretna Einwohner hat (ca. 2.700). En effet, les résultats sportifs ne suivent pas et le club ne parvient pas à quitter la dernière place du classement; l'équipe n'engrange ainsi que quatre petits points au cours des 12 premières journées du championnat, et il faut attendre le 22 septembre 2007 et la venue de Dundee United pour voir le Gretna FC enregistrer son premier succès parmi l'élite sur le score de 3 à 2. Cependant ce succès n'insuffle pas la dynamique tant espérée, la situation du club ne fait qu'empirer, et celle ci est rendue encore plus difficile par les nombreux remous internes; le manager Rowan Alexander est limogé avec un grand mépris (il apprend son licenciement un jour de match, au cours duquel l'accès au stade lui est interdit) et il est remplacé par Davie Irons, qui partira lui même de son propre chef quelques mois plus tard au début de la crise financière que traverse le club. Cette crise financière débute au début de l'année 2008, au mois de février; le président du club Brook Mileson est victime d'un accident cérébral et doit observer le plus grand repos; pendant son absence, les versements hebdomadaires des salaires deviennent aléatoires, le club peine aussi à assumer ses frais de fonctionnement. La pérennité du club repose en effet sur la volonté d'un seul homme - cet homme absent, le club est en grand danger. Le 12 mars 2008, un médiateur est envoyé au club pour tenter de sauver le club de la disparition par des coupes draconiennes dans ses coûts de fonctionnement. La mise sous tutelle du club lui coûte une pénalité de 10 points, amenuisant son déjà faible total de points, tuant ainsi définitivement les maigres espoirs de maintien qui subsistaient. Mais l'important n'est pas vraiment là pour Gretna, qui, sans son mécène, ne semble pas pouvoir survivre à long terme. Chaque jour qui passe est un pas de plus vers la faillite. Au mois de mai 2008, la totalité des joueurs sont laissés libres par l'administrateur, dont le capitaine David Innes, les français Mickael Busher et Aurélien Collin et la star locale sud-américaine Fabian Yantorno. Le club ne fait plus partie de la SFL (Ligue écossaise) depuis le 3 juin 2008. Un appel à des candidatures de clubs souhaitant prendre la place de Gretna en troisième division a été lancé. Parmi les candidats probables étaient Spartans (Edimbourg), Cove Rangers (Aberdeen), Preston Athletic et Annan Athletic. Finalement, Annan Athletic est sélectionné, et joue actuellement en D3.

Het succes van de club kan verklaard worden doordat multimiljonair en clubeigenaar Brooks Mileson de vereniging financieel steunt. De club betaalt de hoogste lonen buiten de Premier League. De club krijgt een nieuw stadion, het oude heeft slechts 2200 plaatsen (terwijl er niet eens 3000 inwoners wonen in Gretna), maar om in de Scottish Premier League te kunnen spelen zijn er 6000 plaatsen vereist.
