- Greg Noll, aka "Da Bull" in reference to his way of "charging" down the face of a wave with apparent fearlessness, is a pioneer of big wave surfing. Noll grew of surfing in the South Bay of Los Angeles and developed his big wave surfing in Palos Verdes at breaks like Lunada Bay. Born in San Diego, California, Noll became known for his exploits in large Hawaiian surf on the North Shore of Oahu. He first gained a reputation in November 1957 after surfing Waimea Bay in 25-30 ft surf when it had previously been thought impossible even to the local Hawaiians. He is perhaps best known for being the first surfer to ride a wave breaking on the outside reef at the so-called Banzai Pipeline in November 1964. "To establish our lineups," Greg Noll wrote, "we worked off Kaena Point and back up on the hill behind Pupukea, taking three or four azimuths, until we finally got our lineups in late afternoon, just as this one particular wave came through. It was the only wave I caught that whole day, and it's permanently etched in my memory. "In a twenty-five-foot wave at Waimea, the shoulder drops off. The wave I caught at Outside Pipeline that day walled up twenty-five-feet high about half a mile in front of me. It broke to the left, so I was riding with my back to the wave, goofyfoot, and it was a god-awful uneasy feeling. Instead of getting smaller as I rode it, the sonofabitch grew on me. It got bigger and bigger, and I started going faster and faster, until I was absolutely locked into it. I felt like I was on a spaceship racing into a void. At first, I could hear my board chattering across the face of the wave in a constant rhythm. As my speed increased, the chattering noise became less frequent. Suddenly there was no noise. For about fifteen or twenty feet, I was airborne. Then I literally was blown off my board. " It was later at Makaha, in December 1969, that he rode what many at the time believed to be the largest wave ever surfed. After that wave and the ensuing wipeout during the course of that spectacular ride down the face of a massive dark wall of water, his surfing tapered off and he closed his Hermosa Beach shop in the early 1970s. He and other surfers such as Pat Curren, Mike Stange, Buzzy Trent, George Downing, Mickey Munoz, Wally Froyseth, Fred Van Dyke and Peter Cole are viewed as the most daring surfers of their generation. Noll is readily identified in film footage while surfing by his now iconic black and white horizontally striped "jailhouse" boardshorts. The surfing exploits of Noll and other big wave legends were chronicled in the documentary Riding Giants. Noll also provides his highly entertaining and significant perspective on Hawaiian big wave surfing that is indexed as a colorful commentary track found in the Riding Giants DVD special features. Noll is also one of the greatest longboard shapers to ever live and his boards are some of the most sought after and expensive in the world. Today Noll lives in Hiouchi, California with his wife and shapes re-creations of some of the historic boards from the sport of surfing. Some of these are: Olos and Alaias, a replica of a Duke Kahanamoku board, Malibu Chips, Guns, Da Cats, Pacific System Homes and others.

Attiré par le mode de vie des surfeurs Greg Noll fait partie de la première grande migration de Californiens, attirés par les vagues de Makaha, vers Hawaii. C'est désormais un homme très musclé, au cou de bœuf, ce qui lui vaut son surnom de "Bull", en plus de son style reconnaissable entre tous ansi que son short rayé noir et blanc. Mais Makaha ne lui suffit plus, il décide d'explorer le North Shore et découvre le "spot" de Waimea Bay. Il a aussi ouvert un magasin de surf à son nom. Mais il restera à jamais gravé comme l'homme ayant surfé la plus grosse vague du XX siècle, le 4 décembre 1969. C'est un jour de tempête sur le Pacifique Nord et après quelques tergiversations, il décide de se lancer à Makaha et surfe la plus grosse vague jamais atteinte en ramant. Ce jour là, il effectua son take off et réussi a descendre au bas de la vague et puis tout s'effondra. Aucune photo n'a été prise, juste le souvenir de quelques surfeurs qui étaient présent sur la plage. À la fin des années 1970 il ferme son magasin et ouvre une poissonnerie industrielle. Mais avec le retour des longboards, il retrouve une activité de shaper de surf.

Data la vicinanza del mare, Greg si avvicina molto presto al surf da onda ed a soli 11 anni entra per la prima volta in acqua, dopo solo un anno si guadagna la fama di ragazzino senza paura. I surfers più esperti notano subito le sue qualità ed è l'unico "Grommet" che ha l' onore di surfare insieme a dei miti di questo sport su tanti spot diversi. Queste esperienze saranno fondamentali per la crescita di Greg che comincia a soffrire la misura contenuta delle onde della California. Una sera, mentre assisteva alla proiezione di un filmato di surf, incontra Mike Stange, famoso per il suo coraggio e la sua abilità a nuotare tra onde enormi, e gli propone di trasferirsi alle Hawaii, dove si diceva rompessero onde 2-3 volte più grosse di quelle californiane. Poche settimane, ed i due sono già sulla north shore hawaiana. Non erano i primi surfisti americani a sbarcare alle Hawaii ma i primi in assoluto a pensare di surfare la north shore oltre alla West coast dove già si surfava da tempo. Nessuno aveva allora il coraggio di sfidare Pipeline e soprattutto la temutissima Waimea, ma Greg, soprannominato "Da bull" da Phil Edwards proprio per la sua ostinazione a surfare le onde che tutti gli altri surfisti ritenevano impossibili, era determinato ad abbattere tali limiti. Ogni sua impresa aveva sempre lo stesso copione: inizialmente, prima di entrare in un nuovo spot tra onde enormi, tutti dicevano "quello è matto, là fuori io non esco e neppure lui ne uscirà vivo...... ", salvo poi vedere Da bull surfare con successo la prima onda e successivamente entrare in acqua per surfare quelle onde ritenute fino a poco prima insurfabili o letali. Nei mesi successivi Greg trascinò i suoi amici in qualsiasi spot fino a che non si imbatté nell'ostacolo più grande: "WAIMEA" (che in hawaiano significa "acqua"). Nessuno voleva surfare Waimea, anzi non ne volevano neanche sentir parlare, si narravano le storie più atroci su quel point. Nel passato, Dickie Cross si avventurò con altri compagni tra le onde di Waimea e morì travolto da un gigantesco close out: il suo corpo non fu mai trovato. Ma Greg non era tipo da farsi intimidire e nel novembre 1957 Waimea cadde sotto il coraggio di Da bull. Dopo la sua prima onda, come al solito i suoi compagni lo seguirono; a fine giornata tutti avevano surfato Waimea senza esserne risucchiati. Altre grandissime imprese sarebbero seguite negli anni successivi, come nel 1964 la surfata "Outer reef" a Pipeline. Stupì tutti abbandonando improvvisamente il surf, ma non era poi tanto strano visto che Greg non avrebbe mai accettato di surfare a un basso livello vista l'età, e preferì quindi dedicarsi con successo alla produzione di tavole da surf, aprì 63 Surf shops solo in Florida. Successivamente cambiò vita e si dedicò alla famiglia e alle amicizie, comiciò a frequentare più assiduamente il suo amico Mike Stange andando spesso a pesca, ma anche in questo caso il suo modo di affrontare le cose lo portò a creare una vera e propria industria del settore con una barca che poteva contenere centodieci tonnellate di pesce. È una vera leggenda vivente del surf da onda e la sua foto con costume a righe che osserva dalla spiggia l'onda enorme di Waimea in attesa di entrare in acqua è l'icona dei surfisti di tutto il mondo.
