- The term Great Timor refers to the concept of a united and independent island of Timor, covering formerly Portuguese East Timor, and formerly Dutch West Timor. East Timor was invaded and occupied by Indonesia in 1975, which annexed the territory as its "27th Province" in 1976, but in a referendum held in 1999, the people of East Timor voted to end Indonesian occupation and become an independent state. This cause widespread anger among many Indonesian nationalists, particularly in the military. In 2001 and 2002, before East Timor's independence, there were claims by the Indonesian military and some commentators, that this would inspire the secession of West Timor from Indonesia. However, there is no real evidence whatsoever that the people of West Timor, most of whom are from Atoni ethnicity who are the traditional enemy of East Timorese, have any interest in joining their tribal enemies. Additionally, East Timor's independence movement never laid claim to West Timor at any time, before the Indonesian invasion or thereafter. Similarly, the government of East Timor fully recognises Indonesia's existing boundaries as inherited from the Netherlands East Indies. This is similar to the position taken by Papua New Guinea in relation to West Papua, when the former became independent of Australia.

Esto causó el enfado de muchos nacionalistas indonesios, especialmente en el ejército. Durante 2001 y 2002, antes de la independencia de Timor Oriental, hubo temor en el ejército indonesio, y algunos medios de comunicación pues temían que esto inspirase la secesión de Timor Occidental de Indonesia. Sin embargo no había ninguna evidencia real, ya que la mayor parte de los habitantes de Timor Occidental son de la etnia atoni, tradicionalmente enfrentados a las tribus del este de Timor, por lo que no tenían ningún interés en unirse a sus vecinos. Es más, en ningún momento se observó que el movimiento independentista de Indonesia Oriental repercutiese en sus vecinos del oeste de la isla. Además el gobierno de Timor Oriental reconoció en todo momento las fronteras ya existentes con Indonesia, heredadas de las Indias Orientales Neerlandesas. Este hecho es similar al que ya había sucedido en Papúa Occidental cuando Papúa Nueva Guinea se independizó de Australia.
- ティモール・ラヤ（大ティモールと訳されることも）（インドネシア語：Timor Raya、英語：Great Timor）は、ティモール島の団結と独立を表す概念であり、その範囲は旧ポルトガル領ティモール（東ティモール）と旧オランダ領ティモール（西ティモール）にわたる。 東ティモールは1975年にインドネシアに占領され、1976年に「27番目の州」として併合されたが、1999年の住民投票で住民は東ティモールのインドネシアからの独立を支持。しかしこれがインドネシアのナショナリスト（特に軍部）の怒りをかうこととなった。 東ティモールが独立する前の2001年と2002年、インドネシア軍部や一部のコメンテーターから「東ティモールの独立は西ティモールの離脱を招く」というような主張が出た。 しかし、実際は西ティモールの住民からはそのような東ティモールの独立に加わるような動きは見られなかった（ちなみに西ティモールの住民の多くは、東ティモールに住む部族とは伝統的に敵対していた民族である）。さらに、東ティモールの独立運動では西ティモールに対しての領有権は主張されなかったし、同様に東ティモール政府はインドネシアと東ティモールの境界線はオランダ領東インドの頃から受け継がれたものだとしている。この点はパプアニューギニアと西パプアの関係と同じであると言えよう。
