The Great Apostasy is a term used by some religious groups to allege a general fallen state of traditional Christianity, or especially of Catholicism, magisterial Protestantism and Eastern Orthodoxy, that it is not representative of the faith founded by Jesus and promulgated through his twelve Apostles: in short, that these churches have fallen into apostasy.

Paulus schreef hierover in een brief aan Timoteüs, in de Tweede brief van Paulus aan Timoteüs: "3 Want er komt een tijd dat de mensen de heilzame leer niet meer verdragen, maar leraren om zich heen verzamelen die aan hun verlangens tegemoetkomen en hen naar de mond praten. 4 Ze zullen niet meer naar de waarheid luisteren, maar naar verzinsels. 5 Jij echter moet in alles nuchter zijn, je lijden aanvaarden, je werk als verkondiger van het evangelie doen, je dienende taak vervullen. " . De mensen kunnen in de periode van de Grote Afval het evangelie niet meer verdragen. In de Tweede brief van Paulus aan de Tessalonicenzen staat, dat de Wederkomst van Jezus Christus niet eerder plaatsvindt dan voordat de Grote Afval er is onder de christenen en de antichrist zich heeft geopenbaard: "3 Laat u door niemand misleiden, op geen enkele manier. De dag van de Heer breekt niet aan voordat velen zich van het geloof hebben afgekeerd en de wetteloze mens verschenen is, hij die verloren zal gaan. 4 Hij zal alles wat goddelijk en heilig is bestrijden en zich erboven verheffen, om in Gods tempel plaats te nemen op de troon en zich voor te doen als God zelf. " . Volgens sommige evangelicale christenen is de Grote Afval al begonnen met de ontkerkelijking na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, welk proces zich heeft voortgezet tot in de 21ste eeuw.
