Gatekeeper steht für Frukwan (Arnold Hamilton), ebenfalls eine Berühmtheit von Stetsasonic. Rzarector ist Prince Rakeem von Wu-Tang Clan und Grym Reaper ist Poetic (Antony Berkeley). Frukwan und Poetic standen nicht nur optisch stets im Zentrum von Gravediggaz, die beiden waren die wichtigsten Writer der Band. Das 2002 erschienene Album Nightmare in a-minor bildete die Zusammenarbeit des Duos, Poetic verstarb kurz nach der Fertigstellung des Werks. Frukwan veröffentlichte 2003 sein Solo-Album Life.

Leur premier album, sorti en 1994 sous le titre 6 Feet Deep (6 pieds sous terre) en Amérique, Niggamortis (jeu de mots entre la rigueur cadavérique, rigor mortis, et le terme nigger)en Europe, crée un style que l'on qualifie d'horrorcore avec son esthétique morbide, son ambiance de film d'horreur et son humour noir. Quelques rappeurs et musiciens extérieurs sont invités sur certains titres. En 1997, sort leur second album, The Pick, the Sickle and the Shovel (la pioche, la faucille et la pelle), qui est beaucoup plus réfléchi que le précédent opus. Prince Paul ne participe quasiment pas à la conception du disque. Le 15 juillet 2001, Poetic décède d'un cancer du colon. Néanmoins, le groupe ne s'arrête pas et un album, sans Prince Paul ni RZA, intitulé Nightmare in A-Minor (Cauchemar en la mineur) sortira quelques mois plus tard. Peu de temps après la sortie de ce dernier opus, Frukwan annonçait la sortie d'un album proposant des morceaux de Poetic jamais sortis jusqu'alors. Mais le projet semble abandonné. Des rumeurs courent quant à une reformation du groupe avec Shabazz The Disciple succédant à Poetic mais de son côté Prince Paul ne souhaite participer à aucune nouvelle refonte de Gravediggaz.
