Gordon Gould (July 17, 1920 – September 16, 2005) was an American physicist who is widely, but not universally, credited with the invention of the laser. Gould is best known for his thirty-year fight with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to obtain patents for the laser and related technologies. He also fought with laser manufacturers in court battles to enforce the patents he subsequently did obtain.

Im Jahre 1957 kreierte Gould den Begriff "LASER" (= Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation). Im Jahre 1977 erhielt Gould nach einem langen Rechtsstreit (seit 1959) mehrere lukrative Patente für optisch-gepumpte Laserverstärker und eine Reihe weiterer Anwendungen des Lasers. 1989 wurde ihm das Patent für den Gasentladungslaser verliehen. 1959 gründete Gould die Firma Technical Research Group Inc.. Von 1967 bis 1973 war er Professor an der Polytechnic University of New York.
