- Goosebumps was a series of young adult's horror fiction novellas created and authored by R. L. Stine. Sixty-two books were published under the Goosebumps umbrella title from 1992 to 1997, the first being Welcome to Dead House, and the last being Monster Blood IV. Various spin-off series were written by Stine; Goosebumps Series 2000, Goosebumps Gold (which was never released), Give Yourself Goosebumps and Goosebumps HorrorLand. The signature cover illustrations for the Goosebumps, Goosebumps 2000 and Goosebumps Gold were done by artist Tim Jacobus. The covers for the later Give Yourself Goosebumps series (#25 onwards and all Special Editions) were done by Craig White. Goosebumps HorrorLand's cover illustrations are created by Steve Scott and Brandon Dorman. The controversial Goosebumps series was often challenged in American libraries for their sometimes-violent content; the novels were fifteenth on the American Library Association's list of most frequently challenged books from 1990 to 1999. They are scary stories for children aged ten and up, and include references for adults to enjoy. The success of the series led to the creation of several adaptations. The series inspired three board games produced by Milton Bradley, "Terror in the Graveyard", "A Night in Terror Tower" and "Escape from HorrorLand", two PC games produced by DreamWorks Interactive entitled "Goosebumps: Escape from HorrorLand" and "Attack of the Mutant", and a TV series featured in Star World. Stine named the original Night of the Living Dummy as his favorite Goosebumps book in his autobiography. The main villain of the sequels Slappy the Dummy has earned the reputation of Goosebumps' most popular antagonist. He is featured in the first book of Goosebumps HorrorLand, Revenge of the Living Dummy. The Monster Blood series is also very popular among fans, albeit not to the extent of the above. There were three sequels, and a new Goosebumps HorrorLand book Monster Blood for Breakfast!. The book One Day at HorrorLand proved to be so popular that R. L. Stine wrote a sequel titled Return to HorrorLand and later the entire Goosebumps HorrorLand series. Two games spun off from the book both named Escape from HorrorLand, one version a boardgame, the other a computer game. The Haunted Mask and its sequel The Haunted Mask II proved so popular that both were made into TV episodes. Stine planned a sequel for the unreleased Goosebumps Gold series called The Haunted Mask Lives!, and there was even a reproduction of the Haunted Mask sold in certain stores. Ultimately, The Scream of the Haunted Mask was released as the fourth part of the Goosebumps HorrorLand series. The book Say Cheese and Die! is also popular, and Stine wrote a sequel to it, Say Cheese and Die--Again! and a new book named Say Cheese and Die Screaming! being the eighth part of the Goosebumps HorrorLand series. Another popular book was The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb and its sequel, The Return of the Mummy. The Goosebumps HorrorLand sequel is Who's Your Mummy? which was the sixth part of the series. A new series of graphic novels has been released featuring some of the most popular books, including The Werewolf of Fever Swamp, The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight and The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena. Some of the most popular characters of the book are Cuddles the Hamster from Monster Blood II, Slappy the Dummy, the HorrorLand Horrors, the Abominable Snowman from The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena, Amaz-O the bunny magician from Bad Hare Day, Prince Khor-Ru, the Mud Monsters, the Egg Monsters from Mars (also being some of the most benevolent monsters), the "Beasts from the East" and Curly the Skeleton. Curly, while having no appearance in any of the books, became the spokesperson and mascot for Goosebumps and has been illustrated in various Goosebumps memorabilia, along with being featured on the cover of five of the Tales to Give You Goosebumps anthologies. Amaz-O from Bad Hare Day and Evan Ross from the Monster Blood books would be featured as guest stars in Return To HorrorLand. Goosebumps HorrorLand draws off popular Goosebumps mini-series and features the return of many classic characters and situations. Stine has also named Brain Juice and Invasion of the Body Squeezers (both from the Goosebumps 2000 series) as two of his favorite books. Overall, the series itself was so popular that it helped spawn a number of children's horror book series in the 1990s, including Fright Time, Spooksville, Spinetinglers, Shivers, Deadtime Stories, Bone Chillers, Graveyard School and Goobumps.

Dans l'édition française, chaque tome de la série possédait un "sous-titre" en jaune au dessus du résumé qui annonce le thème principal du livre. En revanche, lors de la réédition récente des Chair de Poule en France, ce "sous-titre" en jaune au-dessus du résumé disparaît. Les éditions françaises des livres Chair de poule portent les mentions : « À partir de 9-10 ans », « À partir de 9 ans » ou « À partir de 10 ans ».

De boeken zijn in Nederland en België uitgegeven door uitgeverij Kluitman in Alkmaar. Nadat hij voor enkele humoristische tijdschriften had gewerkt, legde Stine zich in 1992 toe op het schrijven van boeken. Met het eerste boek Stay out of the Basement, dat in hetzelfde jaar verscheen, had hij onmiddellijk een groot succes. Per maand worden alleen al in de Verenigde Staten 1,25 miljoen exemplaren verkocht. Ook in Nederland en België is deze serie razend populair.

Alguns o consideram o Harry Potter do início da década de 1990. Em termos de trama, os livros dificilmente são assustadores, já que foram escritos para uma audiência mais nova. Adultos podem achar as situações mais bobas até engraçadas. É óbvio que Stine mantém suas tramas dentro de clichês típicos do terror, tanto que os livros podem ser categorizados dentro de sua trama (monstros, fantasmas, etc.). Mesmo assim, Stine trouxe algumas variações interessantes, como Vingança dos Gnomos de Jardim. Os lugares aonde a história se situa são sempre genéricos, como subúrbios, acampamentos de verão e tal. Alguns dos livros trouxeram seqüências, como Sangue de Monstro, que teve quatro aparições. Estas seqüências pareciam meramente repetir a história do original, e nunca iam muito longe. Além disso, a narrativa é sempre em primeira pessoa. Finalmente, os finais dos livros são sempre indesejáveis; nunca houve um livro Goosebumps com um final totalmente feliz,pois sempre havia um detalhe esquecido ou que surgia no fim do livro que aterrorizava os personagens,como outros fantasmas além das crianças-fantasmas em Praia Fantasma. Após a série original acabar em 1999, Stine começou a escrever livros Goosebumps: Série 2000, sendo que a saída da série original não durou muito tempo, devido à popularidade em declínio. No Brasil, os livros foram inicialmente publicados pela Editora Abril, mas não duraram por muito tempo. Desde 2006, a Editora Fundamento publica os livros no Brasil. A série de TV já passa há anos na TV paga brasileira, através do canal Jetix (antiga Fox Kids). Em português, Goosebumps significa "calafrios", a sensação e arrepio causadas pelo medo.

Stine, incluzând Give yourself Goosebumps şi Goosebumps series 2000, în 1995, respectiv 1998. Cărţile au determinat două jocuri: "Terror in the Graveyard" şi "Escape from Horrorland", un joc PC, precum şi o serie TV. În timpul popularităţii lor, două parodii au fost create de alt autor sub pseudonimul de R.U. Slime numite Gooflumps: Eat Cheese and Barf! şi Stay Out of the Bathroom.
