Google Browser Sync is a software application released as freeware from Google. It debuted in Google Labs on 8 June 2006, and as of June 2008 has been discontinued. It allows users of Mozilla Firefox up to versions 2. x to synchronize their web browser settings across multiple computers via the Internet. It is not compatible with Firefox 3.0 (and Google will not make it compatible, see below).

Google Browser Sync requires a Google account, in which the user's cookies, saved passwords, bookmarks, browsing history, tabs, and open windows can be stored. The data is optionally encrypted using an alphanumerical PIN, which theoretically prevents even Google from reading the data. Passwords and cookies are always encrypted and can only be accessed by the user.

Da jedoch lediglich der Code der Erweiterung veröffentlicht wurde, die Server-Software jedoch auf Basis der Funktionsdokumentation der alten Server von Freiwilligen komplett neu geschrieben werden müsste, scheint es unwahrscheinlich, dass die Software für Endbenutzer jemals wieder nutzbar wird. Zusätzlich müsste die Software für die veränderte Lesezeichenstruktur von Firefox 3 komplett umgeschrieben werden, ein Aufwand, der bei Google als zu groß angesehen wurde.

A PIN-kódot nem lehet utólag megváltoztatni, hiszen akkor a szerveren lévő titkosított adatok elvesznének. A jelszavak és a cookie-k minden esetben titkosítva tárolódnak. A jelszavakat a 2.0-s és újabb Firefoxon nem képes frissíteni (mivel ott signons. txt helyett signons2. txt van, és erre nincs felkészítve). A béta állapotú kiterjesztés már nem tölthető le a Google szervereiről, és csak 2008-ig támogatják a használatát (ezután nem lesz képes a szinkronizációra). A 3.0-s Firefoxon már nem is működik a kiterjesztés, ott a Mozilla Weave-et vagy más szinkronizációs kiegészítőt kell használni.
