Ein Regisseur aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum konkurrierte in der Vergangenheit einmal vergeblich um die Auszeichnung: 2005 Marc Forster für Wenn Träume fliegen lernen. Ebenso blieben Siege weiblicher Filmemacher, ähnlich wie bei den Academy Awards, bisher Ausnahmen. Als einzige Regisseurin konnte 1984 Barbra Streisand für Yentl triumphieren. Eine weitere Nominierung erhielt Streisand 1991 für Herr der Gezeiten, während sich 2003 Sofia Coppola in die Nominiertenliste eintragen konnte.
