gnuLinEx, or LinEx, is a Debian-based GNU-Linux operating system that uses GNOME for its desktop. An initiative of the regional government of Extremadura, Spain, gnuLinEx is intended to be used in all schools in Extremadura, as well as in official institutions. It is actively promoted for business and home use as well. gnuLinEx is only compatible with computers based on the i386 architecture.

  • GNU/LinEx ist eine Debian-basierte öffentliche Linux-Distribution. LinEx ist eine Initiative der Regierung der spanischen Region Extremadura, die im April 2002 beschloss, es auf allen Computern in Schulen und öffentlicher Verwaltung zu verwenden. Ein ähnliches Projekt ist Guadalinex in der Region Andalusien. Die Regionalverwaltung von Extremadura investierte 300.000 Euro in LinEx und konnte dadurch bisher 30 Millionen Euro einsparen. Die Initiative brachte Ende 2003 Extremadura mit zwei Schülern pro Computer europaweit ins Spitzenfeld in diesem Bereich. Bis Mai 2003 wurden 200.000 CDs der Distribution kostenlos in Extremadura verteilt, weitere 70.000 wurden heruntergeladen. Auch die Nutzung in Wirtschaft und privatem Bereich wird aktiv beworben. Die Verwaltung Andalusiens beteiligt sich seit April 2003 an diesem Projekt namens Guadalinex, nachdem auch dort beschlossen wurde, Freie Software in der Verwaltung zu bevorzugen.
