GPF's website has collections of analyses on subjects such as UN reform, international development, NGOs, globalization and the Iraq War. Often these articles provide a view of the behind-the-scenes negotiations and posturing that result in UN action. GPF's stated mission is to: Monitor policy making at the United Nations; Promote accountability of global decisions; Educate and mobilize for global citizen participation; Advocate on vital issues of international peace and justice. GPF has consultative status at the United Nations. It convenes the NGO Working Group on the Security Council about 40 times per year, usually meeting with Security Council Ambassadors and occasionally with senior UN Secretariat officials or Foreign Ministers. Its primary office is in New York, located in the United Nations Plaza. Since September 2004 it has had a branch based in Bonn, Germany, called Global Policy Forum Europe.

Das Global Policy Forum versucht, das gesamte breite Themenspektrum abzudecken, das auch für die UN von Relevanz ist. Es befasst sich daher sowohl mit sicherheitspolitischen als auch mit wirtschafts- und sozialpolitischen Themen, mit dem Schutz der Menschenrechte und der Bereitstellung globaler öffentlicher Güter. Besondere Expertise hat es sich auf dem Gebiet der Finanzierung bzw. Finanznot der UN erworben. Wichtigstes Medium der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit von GPF ist seine Homepage, auf der dem interessierten Publikum eine umfassende und größtenteils hoch aktuelle Datensammlung zur UNO und zu UN-Themen zur Verfügung gestellt wird. Darüber hinaus werden in unregelmäßigen Abständen wissenschaftliche Studien veröffentlicht und Konferenzen veranstaltet. GPF hat Konsultativstatus bei den Vereinten Nationen und ist in verschiedene Netzwerke von Nichtregierungsorganisationen eingebunden. Aus aktuellem Anlass sind Schwerpunktthemen der Arbeit von GPF in jüngerer Zeit vor allem die Reform der Vereinten Nationen, innovative Instrumente der Entwicklungsfinanzierung und der Irak-Krieg.
