Nach seinem College-Abschluss wurde Ginuwine 1996 von der R&B-Gruppe Jodeci entdeckt. Noch im gleichen Jahr erschien sein Debütalbum Ginuwine… The Bachelor, welches von Timbaland produziert wurde. Auf dieser CD befinden sich die Singles Pony und das Prince-Cover When Doves Cry, die in den deutschen Charts zu seinen erfolgreichsten Titeln avancierten. 1999 veröffentlichte er sein zweites Album 100% Ginuwine, das ebenfalls Timbaland produzierte. Una volta cresciuto Elgin ha iniziato a cantare in un altro gruppo, i Physical Wonder, e dopo essersi diplomato al Forestville High School di Forestville, Maryland, nel 1989, si iscrive al Prince Georges Community College di Largo, Maryland, dove pochi anni più tardi si laureerà in legge. Nei primi anni '90 riesce a conoscere i Jodeci, una delle band R&B più popolari all'epoca, ed entra a far parte del collettivo Swing Mob, fondato dal membro dei Jodeci Devante Swing.
