During his time with the club Hodgkinson was an upper-middle-order batsman. Considered "never anything more than a good club cricketer", his reputation was to rise somewhat when, in the first County Championship season after the end of the War, he was made club captain. He was a first-team choice throughout the entire 1946 season, although his average suffered in this new role. Derbyshire ended the season third from bottom of the table. He stopped playing for Derbyshire but played one game for North Wales in 1947. Hodgkinson died at The Pastures, Mickleover, Derbyshire, at the age of 74.
