Elle est devenue célèbre grâce à Jimmy Page, guitariste de Led Zeppelin qui l'employait sur scène pour certains morceaux (Stairway to Heaven, The Song Remains The Same, The Rain Song... ), Slash, ex-guitariste des Guns N' Roses, qui l'utilisait pour des chansons comme Knockin' on Heaven's Door et Patience, et à Don Felder de The Eagles sur scène également pour le titre phare du groupe : Hotel California. C'est un instrument rare, car fabriqué sur commande (et réedité aujourd'hui par le Custom Shop de Gibson), et peu utilisé en raison de son poids conséquent comme de son prix très dissuasif (plus du double de celui d'une SG).
