The Ghicas were a noble Orthodox Christian family, ruling Wallachia and Moldavia for much of the period from the 17th century through the 19th century. The Ghicas originated from Albania and went to Wallachia, Moldavia and Greece during the Ottoman period. Princess Elena Gjika (Dora D'istria) wrote about the Albanian origins of her family in "Gli Albanesi in Rumenia" a history of the dukes of Ghica in the 17th to 19th centuries (2. Ed. , Florence 1873).
