He was drafted in the first round, 16th overall, by the Calgary Flames in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft. Pelawa, who had planned to play for collegiately for the University of North Dakota, was killed in an automobile accident just months after the draft. Tom Cochrane's song "Big League" is rumoured to be about Pelawa. Cochrane says the lyrics are based on a true story, but does not assert the song is about Pelawa. The Flames, meanwhile, honor Pelawa by offering a scholarship to Bemidji High School students in his name.
