- His Grace the Most Rev. Dr. George Otto Simms, D.D. , was an archbishop in the Church of Ireland. He was born at Combermore House in Lifford, a small town in the east of County Donegal, part of the Province of Ulster in Ireland. He also attended the Prior School in Lifford for a time. He went on to study at Trinity College, Dublin, after having attended Cheltenham College, a public school in Britain. He became a deacon in 1935 and a priest in 1936. He was appointed Dean of Cork in 1952; consecrated a bishop, he served as Lord Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, 1952-56. He was successively Lord Archbishop of Dublin, from 1956 to 1969, and then Lord Archbishop of Armagh, from 1969 to 1980. He was also a scholar, who published research on the history of the Church of Ireland and on the Book of Kells. I met Bishop George Simms at Holy Communion, in St Colm's Church of Ireland, in Port Noo County Donegal in 1991. There was only a few people in attendance, & after the sermon the Rector invited us to her home for morning coffee. While having our coffee, Bishop Simms presented The Rector with his beautifully illustrated children's book, on the Book Of Kells. My cousin had accompanied my wife & me over to Port Noo. He lived in County Antrim, Northern Ireland; while we were revisiting Port Noo, having spent our honeymoon there years before. Although we originated from County Antrim ourselves, we lived in Western Australia, but were spending a year as exchange teachers in Oxfordshire. We found Bishop Simms to have been a very interesting man. He was a scholar; & spoke fluent Irish. Moreover, he could read the old Irish language, & during our time in Port Noo, we came across Bishop George, camera at hand, & taking notes from the tomb stones on Inniskeel Island, where there were the remains of an old Monastery. Not long after we returned to our Oxfordshire village, I had a phone call from my cousin in County Antrim to say, that he was saddened as he was just reading Bishop George Simms' obituary. This saddened us also. A great human being. Bill Reid. Kinvarra Park Lodge, Busselton Western Australia. George Otto Simms is interred with his wife, Mercy Felicia née Gwynn (1915 - 1998) in the cemetery attached to the church St. Maelruain, Tallaght, Co. Dublin. Aubrey O'Callaghan. Trinidad & Tobago
