George Fernandes (born June 3, 1930) is a trade unionist, agriculturist, political activist, journalist and was the member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India. He represented the Muzaffarpur constituency of Bihar and was a founder member of the Janata Dal (United) party. Fernandes was a defence minister in the National Democratic Alliance Government (1998-2004). He contested the 15th Lok Sabha as an independent candidate, because his party, denied him ticket and lost the elections.

Il représente le groupe de supporters Muzaffarpur du Bihar et est membre du parti de centre-gauche Janata Dal (United). George Fernandes a été le ministre indien de la défense du gouvernement de l’Alliance Nationale Démocratique (NDA) (1998-2004). Il est président de l'Alliance Nationale Démocratique, actuellement dans l’opposition. Il a qualifié ouvertement la Chine d'ennemi No 1 de l'Inde et a critiqué la politique chinoise de fourniture d’armes sophistiquées au Pakistan. Il a aussi critiqué les Chinois pour le renforcement de leur armée à travers l'Himalaya au Tibet et a régulièrement soutenu la cause des Tibétains contre l'occupation chinoise. En 1998, alors qu’il est ministre de la défense, George Fernandes, déclara que la bombe nucléaire est utile pour se protéger de la menace chinoise.

Vid valet 1998 tillhörde Fernandes Samata Party och blev försvarsminister i den BJP-ledda koalitionsregering som kom att sitta fram till 2004. Efter anklagelser om korruption inom försvarsdepartementet avgick Fernandes i februari 2001, men blev åter försvarsminister redan några månader senare. 2003 gick Samata Party ihop med Janata Dal (U) under det senare partiets namn. Fernandes blev partiledare.
