He was himself nominated for an Academy Award for the 1968 comedy short film The Dove, a parody of Ingmar Bergman's films, which he co-directed as well as starred in. Coe is also known for a guest starring role in "Star Trek The Next Generation". In the 1991 episode "First Contact", he plays Chancellor Durkin, the ruler of an alien planet with whom the Federation is attempting to establish relations. In 1970 he originated the role of David in the original broadway cast of Stephen Sondheim's Company. Coe was born in Jamaica, Queens, New York City.
