George Augustus Henry Cavendish, 1st Earl of Burlington, known as Lord George Cavendish before 1831, was the third son of the 4th Duke of Devonshire and the former Lady Charlotte Boyle, a daughter of the 3rd Earl of Burlington (of the first creation). His maternal grandfather was the 3rd and last Earl of Burlington of the first creation which title had become extinct on his death in 1753.

On 10 September 1831 Cavendish was created Baron Cavendish of Keighley, in the County of York, and Earl of Burlington. He married Lady Elizabeth Compton, a daughter of the 7th Earl of Northampton, on 27 February 1782 in London.
