George Frederick "Buzz" Beurling DSO, DFC, DFM & Bar, RCAF (6 December 1921 – 20 May 1948), was the most successful Canadian fighter pilot of the Second World War. Beurling was recognized as "Canada's most famous hero of Second World War", as "The Falcon of Malta" and the "Knight of Malta", having shot down 27 Axis aircraft in just 14 days over the besieged Mediterranean island. Beurling was recognized as "Canada's most famous hero of Second World War", as "The Falcon of Malta" and the "Knight of Malta", having shot down 27 Axis aircraft in just 14 days over the besieged Mediterranean island. Before the war ended his total climbed to either 31 or 31 1/3. Beurling's wartime service was terminated prior to war's end. In an attempt to continue combat flying in the postwar era, Beurling lost his life in a crash en route while delivering an aircraft to Israel.
- George Beurling est un pilote de l'air canadien, ayant notamment combattu durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il grandit dans une famille de cinq enfants. Enfant, il n'a qu'une seule passion : les avions. À neuf ans il passe son baptême de l'air. D'un naturel indiscipliné, Beurling fit ses premières missions de guerre en Angleterre (2 victoires), puis en juin 1942 il fut affecté au Squadron 249 à Malte. C'est sur cette île (le paradis des pilotes de chasse de l'époque) que la précision de son tir et son excellente vue lui permirent de réaliser des exploits : 7 victoires en 4 jours (Distinguished Flyning Medal), 4 chasseurs (2 Macchi et 2 Bf-109) détruit le 27 juillet... etc. Il reçut la Distinguished Flying Cross au bout de sa 23ème victoire. Le 14 octobre au cours de combats avec des Ju-88 et des Bf-109, il fut blessé aux côtes, au coude et sa jambe gauche mais il parvint à sauter en parachute de son spitfire criblé de balles et tomba dans la mer (Distinguished Service Order) où il fut secouru par un bateau de sauvetage. Il retourna alors en Angleterre puis au Canada puis fut nommé Flight Commander au Sqaudron 242 de la RCAF. Au total il obtint 31 victoires. Après la guerre il livra aux pays du moyen-orient des avions militaires de surplus (il s'écrasa au décollage d'un de ses appareils à Rome en 1948). Il avait pour surnom "screwball", la toupie. Il est considéré par certains comme le meilleur pilote de chasse canadien lors de son passage dans la RAF et la RCAF.
