Georg Wilhelm Pabst (25 August 1885 – 29 May 1967) was an Austrian film director. Pabst was born in Raudnitz, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary, the son of a railroad employee. Returning from the United States, he was in France when World War I began. He was interned there near Brest until 1919.

- Georg Wilhelm Pabst, üblicherweise bezeichnet als G. W. Pabst, war ein österreichischer Filmregisseur. Pabst gelangt über das Theater zum Film, wo er zunächst in anderen Bereichen tätig ist, bevor er mit Der Schatz 1923 sein Regie-Debüt abliefert. Sein erster großer Erfolg wird der Film Die freudlose Gasse 1925. Mit diesem Film beginnt eine äußerst produktive Zeit mit durchweg künstlerisch wertvollen und kommerziell erfolgreichen Filmen. Pabst etabliert sich mit seinen Filmen schnell als einer der Hauptvertreter der „Neuen Sachlichkeit“ im Film in Deutschland. Seine letzten Stummfilme sind Die Büchse der Pandora und Tagebuch einer Verlorenen die er mit der amerikanischen Schauspielerin Louise Brooks dreht. 1930 konnte Pabst seinen ersten Tonfilm Westfront 1918 realisieren. Der Film führt in Deutschland genau wie Lewis Milestones Film All Quiet on the Western Front zu heftigen Diskussionen. Zur Zeit der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten in Deutschland befindet sich Pabst gerade zu Dreharbeiten in Frankreich. Er beschließt, in Frankreich zu bleiben, wo er noch einen weiteren Film verwirklicht. Die nächste Station ist Hollywood, wo er allerdings mit dem Film A modern Hero 1934 scheitert. 1936 kehrt Pabst wieder nach Frankreich zurück, ohne in Hollywood noch einen weiteren Film inszeniert zu haben. In Frankreich dreht er bis 1939 noch drei weitere Filme. Noch im Jahr 1938 beschließt er, endgültig in die USA zu gehen. Er wird allerdings im September 1939 durch den Beginn des zweiten Weltkrieges in Österreich, wo er gerade seine Familie besucht, überrascht. Da er das Deutsche Reich nicht mehr verlassen kann, dreht er nun Filme für die Bavaria Film. Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg kann Pabst nicht mehr an die Erfolge früherer Zeiten anknüpfen. Er dreht Filme in Österreich, Italien und Deutschland. Nicht unerwähnt bleiben sollten allerdings seine Filme Der letzte Akt und Es geschah am 20. Juli, die beide 1955 gedreht wurden. Seine Karriere endet mit den beiden Auftragsarbeiten Rosen für Bettina und Durch die Wälder, durch die Auen (beide 1956). Pabst ist auf dem Wiener Zentralfriedhof (Gruppe 32 C, Nummer 31) in einem Ehrengrab beigesetzt. 1968 wurde die Georg-Wilhelm-Pabst-Gasse in Wien-Favoriten nach ihm benannt.

Some of his most famous films concern the plight of women in German society, including The Joyless Street (1925) with Greta Garbo and Asta Nielsen, Geheimnisse einer Seele (1926) with Lili Damita, The Loves of Jeanne Ney (1927) with Brigitte Helm, Pandora's Box (1928), and Diary of a Lost Girl (1929), the last two starring American actress Louise Brooks. He also co-directed with Arnold Fanck a mountain film entitled The White Hell of Pitz Palu (1929) starring Leni Riefenstahl. After the coming of sound he made a trilogy of films that secured his reputation: Westfront 1918 (1930), The Threepenny Opera (1931), and Kameradschaft (1931). Pabst also filmed three versions of Pierre Benoit's novel L'Atlantide in 1932, in German, English, and French, titled Die Herrin von Atlantis, The Mistress of Atlantis, and L'Atlantide, respectively. In 1933, Pabst directed Don Quixote, once again in German, English, and French versions. After making A Modern Hero (1934) in the U.S. and Mademoiselle Docteur (1936) in France, Pabst returned to Austria and Germany in 1938—to take care of family business, he later claimed. He made two films during the Nazi period, Komödianten (1941) and Paracelsus (1943). In 1953, Pabst directed four opera productions in Italy: La forza del destino for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, and a few weeks later, for the Arena di Verona Festival, a spectacular Aïda, with Maria Callas in the title role (conducted by Tullio Serafin, with del Monaco), Il trovatore and again La forza del destino. Pabst died in Vienna, Austria and was interred at the Zentralfriedhof in Vienna.
