Georg Heinrich Mettenius (November 24, 1823 – August 18, 1866) was a German botanist who was a native of Frankfurt am Main. He was son-in-law to botanist Alexander Braun (1805-1877). In 1845 he received his medical doctorate from the University of Heidelberg. Following graduation, he studied botany and performed field investigations of marine algae at Helgoland and Fiume.

Il est ensuite nommé en 1850 professeur de botanique à l'université de Freiburg. Il devint professeur en titre de l'université de Leipzig en 1852 ainsi que directeur de son jardin botanique, succédant à Gustav kunze (1793-1851). Il est mort du choléra à l'âge de 42 ans. Ce sont surtout les travaux de Mettenius sur les fougères qui font autorité.
