Geoffrey Oryema is an internationally renowned Ugandan musician. In 1977, at the age of 24 and at the height of Idi Amin's power, Oryema was smuggled across the Ugandan border in the trunk of a car, after the death of his father, Erinayo Wilson Oryema, who was a cabinet minister, beginning a life in exile. Today his songs keep alive the languages of his youth - Swahili and Acholi and return to the lost country - the 'clear green land' of Uganda.

Besides his two native languagues mentioned earlier, he also sings in English and French. On July, 2005 he performed at the LIVE 8: Africa Calling concert in Cornwall, and with 1 Giant Leap at the Live 8 Edinburgh concert.

Il s'établit à Lillebonne (Seine-Maritime) en 1989, puis se marie à une Française peu après et obtient la nationalité française. Il a enregistré son premier album Exile en 1990, produit par Brian Eno, et édité par le label Real World par Peter Gabriel. Il s'accompagne pour créer sa musique de divers instruments typiquement africains, dont la kora, mais ne dédaigne pas non plus la guitare électrique et les instruments rock. Il chante en anglais, en kiganda et en français. Dès ce premier album, il a rapidement connu un succès international avec Ye Ye Ye ou encore Land of Anaka, co-écrit avec Brian Eno et dont Peter Gabriel assure les chœurs. La presse française et internationale l'a souvent dépeint comme un « Leonard Cohen africain ». Il s'affirme de plus en plus comme un artiste africain assumant ses influences rock, créateur et artiste à part entière et très apprécié sur la scène musicale internationale comme Lokua Kanza ou Richard Bona.
