- The Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado was established in 1996 as a project of the Gill Foundation. It has provided financial support and critical resources to hundreds of high-impact nonprofit organizations throughout Colorado that share the fund’s commitment to advancing equality and improving quality of life for people across the state. It has invested more than $22 million in Colorado nonprofits and is located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Gay & Lesbian Fund works with and supports organizations that may not focus their work on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) issues, but are inclusive of LGBT people in their personnel policies, programs, and outreach. As a philanthropic organization, the Gay & Lesbian Fund is committed to advancing equality for all Coloradans, building a better Colorado through advocacy, grantmaking and philanthropic leadership, and strengthening nonprofits. It invests in high-impact nonprofit organizations in Colorado whose work benefits the common good, in the areas of Arts and Culture (visual arts, performing arts, and cultural programs with priority given to events and performances), Public Participation (programs that empower people to participate more effectively in their communities), Healthy Families (programs that serve the needs of children, youth, and families), and Public Broadcasting (public and local radio and television programming). The Gay & Lesbian Fund’s grantees demonstrate shared values with fellow Coloradans about quality of life and equal opportunity; demonstrate civic mindedness that promotes social equality; and identify, build, and promote common ground with people throughout Colorado – including private citizens, businesses, government entities, nonprofits, educational institutions, and faith-based and religious organizations. In addition to its grantmaking, the Gay & Lesbian Fund provides technical assistance (computer training and technology support), provides community services such as public meeting space, sponsors booths at festivals and events, does community outreach, serves as a community liaison, promotes and initiates collaborations, hosts and initiates convenings, offers education on LGBT/nonprofit/community topics, hosts film screenings, offers board development resources, and offers fundraising workshops and capacity-building workshops. Known for its visionary leadership in the quest for equality for LGBT people, the fund encourages people to advocate for equality and engage in the civic process. It provokes educational dialogue about the meaning of equality, and is transforming the way Coloradans view lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals, with a vision for an inclusive and safe society for all people. Mary Lou Makepeace, the first female mayor of Colorado Springs, CO from 1997 to 2003, became the executive director of the Gay & Lesbian Fund in December 2003.
