In zijn jeugd leerde hij zichzelf vibrafoon spelen, wat ertoe leidde dat hij op 17-jarige leeftijd zijn eerste opnames mocht maken in Nashville (Tennessee) met de gitaristen Hank Garland en Chet Atkins. Zo'n 2 jaar later stopte hij met zijn studie op het befaamde Berklee College of Music in Boston, om in 1964-1965 samen met George Shearing en Stan Getz te spelen. In die tijd won hij de Down Beat Magazine's Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition Award en bracht hij onder eigen naam een drietal albums uit. In 1967 besloot hij zijn eigen kwartet op te richten, het Burton Quartet, waarmee hij ritmes uit de rockmuziek combineerde met een jazz-geluid en vele improvisaties. In 1971 kwam Burton met een uniek soloalbum Alone At Last, dat was opgenomen tijdens het Montreux Jazz Festival in 1971. Dat album leverde hem zijn eerste Grammy Award op. In zijn gehele carrière won hij maar liefst vijf Grammy's: onder meer met de albums Native Sense, met Chick Corea op de piano, en Like Minds met eveneens Corea, Pat Metheny, Ray Haynes en Dave Holland. Momenteel is Burton adjunctdirecteur van het Berklee College Of Music in Boston en is hij bezig aan een tweede cd met Gary Burton Generations.

Musikerna på inspelningen är förutom Gary Burton också saxofonisten Boots Randolph, gitarristen Chet Atkins, jazzviolinsten Brenton Banks, basisten Bob Moore, jazzgitarristen Hank Garland och trummisen Buddy Harman. Burton stannade kvar ett tag i Nashville och medverkade som planerat på Hank Garlands debutalbum Jazz Winds. Efter sejouren i Nashville började Burton studera på den jazzorienterade musikhögskolan Berklee College of Music innan han påbörjade sin jazzkarriär. Han spelade i början av sin karriär med George Shearing och sedan med Stan Getz. Sitt första egna skivalbum kom ut 1961.
