To qualify as an International Exhibition, a show must be recognised by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), which was established by a diplomatic international Convention, signed in Paris,in 1928. Shows can also be recognised by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (IAPH). To qualify as a National Exhibition, a garden festival must be recognised by a national government. Because garden design is becoming more popular and featuring on TV, there is an ever-growing number of garden festivals: permanent and temporary, official and non-official. One of the best known is International Garden Festival held on a permanent site at Chaumont in France. Despite the name, Chaumont does not come within the BIE definition of an 'international' festival. Other shows feature garden design but describe themselves as 'flower shows'. The best-known example in this category, the Chelsea Flower Show is seeing a shift of emphasis towards garden design and there is talk of a Chelsea Fringe Flower and Garden Festival in 2008.
  • Eine internationale Gartenschau ist eine internationale Ausstellung zu den Themen Garten, Landschaftsarchitektur, Landschaftsbau, Pflanzenzucht und Gartengeräte/-Möbel. Neben Bundesbehörden und den ausrichtenden Städten ist heute stets die 1993 gegründete Deutsche Bundesgartenschau GmbH (DBG) beteiligt, hinter ihr stehen der Zentralverband Gartenbau e.V. (ZVG), der Bundesverband Garten-, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau (BGL) und der Bund deutscher Baumschulen (BdB). Die Schirmherrschaft einer Internationalen Gartenschau wird wie bei einer Bundesgartenschau vom jeweiligen Bundespräsidenten übernommen. In Deutschland findet alle 10 Jahre die Internationale Gartenbauausstellung (IGA) statt. Sie ersetzt im jeweiligen (ungeraden) Jahr zugleich die biennale Bundesgartenschau (BUGA). Interessierte Städte müssen sich nach einem bestimmten Reglement um die Austragung der IGA bewerben. Internationale Gartenbauausstellungen werden von der Bundesrepublik Deutschland beim Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in Paris beantragt und müssen zudem von der Association Internationale des Producteurs de l`Horticulture (AIPH) genehmigt werden. Die endgültige Entscheidung zur Durchführung trifft das BIE. Die Floriade (Niederlande) durchläuft das gleiche internationale Genehmigungsverfahren. Die nächste Internationale Gartenschau auf deutschem Boden findet vom April bis Oktober 2013 in Hamburg auf den Elbinseln Wilhelmsburg und Veddel statt, die zugleich Austragungsort der 2013 endenden Internationalen Bauausstellung IBA Hamburg sind.
