- The Galveston Bay Area, or Bay Area Houston, is a loosely defined region in the southeastern mainland of the Houston-Galveston Metro Area, Texas in the United States. It is roughly defined by the area along the western banks of Galveston Bay and extends inland several miles. The Galveston Bay Area is sometimes called Houston's Bay Area or other names, but residents in the vicinity of Houston-Galveston typically call it simply "the Bay Area". Though some of the area is part of Galveston County, Galveston Island itself is not normally considered part of the Bay Area, nor is most of Houston. This area played a key role in Texas history having been the site of some of the most significant early rebellions against Mexican rule and the site of the victory of the Texas army against the Mexican army during the Texas Revolution. Despite being seen by some as a sleepy region of Houston-Galveston, the area in fact is the heart of both the nation's manned space program and the nation's petrochemical industry. The region's landscape features a mix of swamps, beaches, industrial facilities, tourist havens, and historic sites.
