The Galicia team only plays friendly matches, usually during the winter-break. Galicia's biggest supporters are known as Siareiros Galegos. They should not be confused with the term Siareiros, used to refer to all Galicia's supporters, no matter if they are or not part of that group. Since the 1980s, there has been an intense public debate on whether or not Galicia should gain full official status, that is, the right to take part in official international competitions, apart from Spain. This includes the football team and any other sport. Quite often, the cases of Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and the Faroe Islands are cited as examples of non-sovereign territories taking part in official international competitions.

Die Teilnahme an galicischen Spielen schließt aber nicht aus, dass ein Spieler für eine andere Nationalmannschaft antreten darf, wie dies zum Beispiel auch Cabanas für die Schweiz tut.
